accessing registry on secondary WinXP?

last night I accidentally removed a registry entry, now when windows is starting up I get a message that C:\WINDOWS\System32\Config\System is missing. I have borrowed a HD with XP installed but is it possible to access the registry on my WinXP (the one that's damaged)?

Use the recoevry console.

I think in XP still, the registry is only made up into 2 files.

system.dat
user.dat

Dont know if that helps,
