Access Laptop Harddrive

I've got a friend who has a laptop that just died, the computer is doing absolutely nothing when turned on, and I am pretty confident that this problem has nothing to do with the hard drive. He needs to get some stuff off of it, and he doesn't have another laptop he can put it into.

I have never fussed with laptop hard drives at all. Can I easily put a hard drive from an ASUS laptop into an HP laptop, or is there an adapter that I can buy to hook this laptop hdd up through usb or something?

The easiest way to access your friend's hard drive without placing it into another laptop is to buy either a USB external enclosure or a USB adapter. There are plenty of both available at NewEgg and other online retailers.
