Hey guys,

I store a lot of stuff on my HTPC (the one in my sig). It runs Win 7 Pro. At home I have the HTPC sort of act like a file server. It automatically backs up data from my laptop and my wifes laptop on a daily basis. I want to be able to access the files on my HTPC from anywhere, so I was wondering how to set it up where I can access it through the internet? Like a file server. Thanks.

You could open up the cifs ports on your firewall to the internet so that any windows machine could access your files directly however I would not do that because of obvious security reasons. What functionality do you really want with this?

Well looking I definitely want something with some security. My goal is to have access to all my documents, pictures, and any other files wherever I go. Sort of like my own Cloud.

FTP Server might work, as long as it could just look at existing directories.

The easiest way is Live Mesh. It will let you sync files, and also remote into your pc from outside and you can access any file.

FTP transmits passwords in plaintext

You should ideally have a ssh server and just use sftp

But I am not understand what you want to do, view the files as if you were local? That will be slow depending on your hosts upload speed.

There are several options for secure FTP connections. Both encrypted communication with the server as well as secure data transmission.

I use dropbox to sync all my documents online, and teamviewer to remote connect to my computer for everything else.

sftp / scp + webdrive with caching would be my best guess. Will still be fairly slow.

i am working on something similar for our home network. its actually a website that you would navigate to, like youtube.com, where you just log in and a list of all our media is there and playable from the browser. no matter where you are you can watch movies and listen to our music. its a one-off project and i wont be releasing it, but its a simple concept that anyone can make really. im use flowplayer for the media content, as its free. if you are handy with web programing its very easy to set something similar up.

performance is all dependant on your upload speed though. 1080p movies take a few seconds to buffer normally.

Sounds similar to zumocast -- I wouldn't say it's exactly ready for primetime yet, but I use it as a backup for Air Video and Subsonic on my iphone.

You need to teach me your secrets where you can get 1080p to stream semi-reasonably from a residential outbound connection

I think a secure FTP connection is what I am looking for. I just want to be able to access all my files no matter where I am. Sort of a failsafe if I forget something, or if I want to easily transfer files to someone's computer. I hope thats less vague. Mostly documents, music, and pictures. Movies are sort of out of the question cause I am betting my upload speed is only around 50KB/s. It'd take all day just to transfer a movie, but I guess if I was stranded someplace for multiple days it could be an option.
