Accelero 7970 VRM Temps too high?

This thread proves that people will argue over the most mundane things if they feel that someone is saying they're wrong. :)

Anyway, does anybody have any idea on how to cool the VRMs? I am sure that the heatsinks are properly installed, would making a 120mm fan blow on the side of the card help or would it fuck up their airflow? I mean from the the thin side (where the crossfire connection is)?

Whats your VRM temps while playing BF3 // Crysis 2 or any of those very demanding games ?.

I've seen also 100c+ with Furmark but besides that, it stays between 45-55 degrees (WoW, BF3 , Metro 2033).

Maybe while the VRM's are rated for 125C running those temps might cause components around them to reach unsafe levels. Either way i've set the fan's to 40% which is still silent and that gives a VRM temp of 49C and 51C after a long Civ5 session.

Thanks for the link, I assume this means the Asus DCU II is fine at 100c on the VRMs. As I said earlier, they wouldn't let it get to those temperatures if they were dangerous to the card.

To the OP, as long as you get them under 100c they will be fine. At this temperature they are within tolerances. Of course lower is always better but under 100c is not going to kill your VRMs.

Also, sorry for going OT and arguing over something as silly as VRMs on an internet forum. My apologies Evil Scooter.

Eh.. my bad as well. I know better. Spending too much time talking politics lately and it's got me on a hair trigger.

Anyway. It was in the high 70's here yesterday so I looped ungine for 30 minutes with all the settings maxed out. GPU usage was 99% the entire time and got these temps:

That's the warmest I've ever seen it get. Hardly horrible. I'd still like to get some better cooling for summer but I'm really torn now between getting an Accelero and adding my own custom VRM cooling block or simply setting up a water loop for my CPU and GPU. The only parts I'm missing are the CPU and GPU blocks. Everything else needed is already on hand so the cost delta is minimal. The Accelero would be maintenance free.. a water loop is not but cools much more effectively.

Evil Scooter,
I was getting mysterious crashes in skyrim after going with the accel 7970s, after I went full water, the crashes went away.
I think something is not getting cooled with the accel 7970s ;/

So i'd say go full water!

If something is not cooled properly its because of a bad installation, plain and simple.
I've posted my results many times, there is absolutely nothing wrong with Accelero.

From my driver comparison as recorded by HWiNFO64

Bottom Card Max VRM: 59.0 °C

Ordered mine. Should be here Tuesday or Wednesday and Ill post my findings.

what are you guys fan profiles like? If I use the default one my VRMs max out in the late 90s pretty quick. A custom fan profile that allows the fan to go up to 50%, which is still far quieter than my already quiet PC (and to be honest I can't hear the difference between the default 20% and 50%), keeps my VRMs at around 70 - 75 C

So I got mine up and running. The whole 5 hour thing to let the glue cure is stupid, so I sped up the process with a little warmth :)

After gaming for 30 minutes in BF3, 1.175v 1100mhz//1701mhz I hit 51c GPU, 73c and 61c on the VRMs so no issue with VRMs here. I heatsinked everything like the one site that reviewed the cooler did as there were plenty to go around.

Best thing about it? My case fans are now the loudest thing in my case, which arent loud at all (rated 28db, s-flex fans). Im not sure how you guys handle 50% +. I guess I could when I was younger, but now Ive hit my 30s and Im not into the noise!

Heres the review sit and they have a very good write-up on the install for those wanting it.

ok.. im almost buying one of this...

what about if I need to remove it? because you will need to glue the memory and vrms heatsinks... is this glue removable?

did anyone already remove it?

The glue is removable. It never gets hard like cement. It attaches well enough to hold the sinks firmly on, but can be removed later (think of rubber cement kind of how it bonds but will still rub off).

Except I'm not disclaiming that I felt 90c was too hot. I do. We're discussing the other bogus claims you attributed to my post in constructing your strawman.

No. I repeated stated I'd never let mine get that hot. You took that statement and ran with it to the point of stupidity with assertions like:

Right. Me stating no way I'd let mine get that hot is the exact same thing as me saying it'd catch fire. Why would I have issues with that interpretation? Next time it hits 100f outside and I say "I'm too hot" I'm absolutely sure people in earshot will take that to mean I expect to burst into flames at any moment.

The point is that aftermarket cooling should be better. Period.

Let me assist your reading comprehension issues. I said:

"^^^ I understand what the VRM's are rated at."

See that lil' dot at the end after the word "at"? It's called a period. It signifies the end of the sentence. As in full stop. After that.. in the next sentence I stated:

"These gpu's are rated at over 90c as well."

Two separate sentences.

I never said 100c VRM would do damage...
I never said 100c VRM would cause a fire...
I never said 100c VRM is dangerous...
I never said 100c VRM would kill a graphics card...

Not outright...
Not implied...
Not by jist...
Not in a tree...
Not on a train...
Not on a boat with a goat...

Scooter I am.

You are discussing points you claim I implied instead of what I actually said. Your issues distinguishing the difference between what I actually said and what you claim I implied are not my problem or an issue with my memory.

Evilscooter: just ignore him. He's trying to act educated by using a webpage to rip your argument with "fallicies" when he took your post and turned it into a strawman argument. I too was wondering exactly where the "I would never let my cards get this hot" turned into "getting cards this hot would cause a fire."

Just because something is rated at a certain degrees C, does not mean that people will always feel comfortable LETTING them reach those limits.

But hey, I guess everyone wants to create fallacious arguments (as he did to you) to attempt to prove that another person is using a fallacious argument...(when your post was spot on) :/

I guess that's why he bailed and stopped replying to ya :)

QFT

I knew that the vrms on my GTX280 were rated for 125c but I never felt comfortable when the crept near 90c and I never over volted that card because of that.

I didn't stop replying, I apologised for my behaviour and moved on. You clearly missed that post, please read the entire thread don't try to stir crap up again.

I didn't see the post where you apologized. I only saw you replying to another person below. If you apologized, then cool, and sorry for restirring the pot.

I also wanted to say that the ratings for these ICs are all based on stock operations. When people start overclocking and overvolting, you have to take that into consideration also.

Not a problem, I can see why some of my posts could cause people's blood to boil. I did unintentionally create a straw man argument out of Evil Scooter's quote, I read my post a few days later and realised I was being a moron. So I apologised.

You raise a very good point on the ratings being for stock. When using stock speeds my VRMs using the Alpenphoen Peter 7970 cooler hits mid 80s. When OCd they can easily hit mid 100s unless I ramp up the fan speed drastically.

True but what is stock? The vrms really aren't made for these cards specifically. I would imagine that even the mild overvolting that people do would fall within the stock specs for those vrms but I could be completely wrong. Most people don't take cooling into consideration though.

Well when you raise the voltage, the VRM temps skyrocket and the current going through them is so much greater, even if the GPU temps remain in check. I'm assuming that high temps from very high current and high voltages (like 1200mv+) are much worse than high temps from lackluster cooling and average current (@1050mv, 1175mv, etc).

I'm not disagreeing with you but with proper cooling I'm sure that they are rated to handle that current. The GTX570 might be a recent exception. That said I don't go crazy with core voltage on my video cards.

So VRM temps jumped ALOT with increase in voltage. VRMs touching 100c and 80c now when gaming for awhile with a 62c temp on GPU. Case was heatsoaked HORRIBLY as I had an intake fan disconnected at the time so they probably wont be that high next time (intake fan shoots from the bottom of the case up directly into the GPU). Still tweaking the voltage, but currently working w/ 1.198v ACTUAL (1.23v in MSI AB) at those temperatures, 1202mhz core, 1730mhz memory. It did take ALOT of tweaking to get there as this card seems to be SUPER touchy (I assume low VID and OCP as someone else advised me).

1.05v is my default VID on this card (1.01v actual).

Hello, i just google it for VRM temps and i found this thread.

I want to ask something. So basically the accelero cooler doesn't cool the VRMs proper, its not my fault when i installed this cooler ?

I have a GTX680 Lightning, and mounted accelero xtreme 3 because my stock fans were broken.

I kept the 680's unisink, and mounted only the cooler.

And now in games like BF4, i have 72-78 degrees on VRM's. This is OK for a GTX680, will not broke the card ?

72-78 is fine. Those are the max temps after a period of gaming? It's absolutely fine. You don't want them over 85 degrees for long periods, under tha and you're fine.

Well, in my games i use a fps cap, i don't let the fps free, because i want to play at a fixed fps rate. So capping the fps will not let the GPU usage go to full 99%.

The GPU usage in BF4 stays almost all the time at an average of 78-86%, and can go up to 99% for some seconds or down to 30%, depends of what happens in the game.

Yes, basically when i start to play after about 10 minutes they rise up to 72 degrees, then depends of how much i play they start to stabilize at 75-77 degrees.

I know i don't have stock VRM's on my Lightning card. What are those Golden SSC VRM's ratings in terms of heat ?

PS: With the stock MSI cooler i had max of 69 degrees on VRMs.
