AC'97 - Clarify the term behind it...

Everywhere I go, I see 'AC'97'. I know for sure it's the sound technology or something but I also do remember back in the days when the AC'97 technology was criticized for its lousy sound quality and so on. Now I see that same technology on our latest motherboards. On top of that, they say it sounds good too. What gives? Technology improved? Also, whenever I see 'AC'97' I keep thinking that it was made in the year of 1997 with a name called 'AC'. I may be completely wrong but do clarify it, please. Thanks. ;)

the way I see it is that it's like a standard for integrated sound. It's pretty much a specification that needs to be matched to be considered AC97: it uses a seperate chip for sound 'effects' by a company, while another part of sound processing is in the southbridge (is the newer A64 boards still considered AC97? i dont know).

someone correct me if i'm wrong.. i'm curious to the 'real' answer as well..
 
AC 97 is a minimum standard that was developed in 1997. It has since been through numerous revisions to increase its lifespan, but it will soon be replaced with Intel's new High fidelity sound standard to be released soon. Here is a snippet of the ac 97 standard from intel:
Audio Codec '97 (AC '97) defines a high-quality, 20-bit audio architecture for the PC that is used in the majority of today's desktop platforms. The AC '97 Component Specification version 2.3 (AC '97 v2.3) is the next evolution of integrated analog audio.

By providing parametric data about the analog device being used, the end-user's experience can be significantly enhanced. Intelligent, dynamic audio configurations may be implemented, opening the door for innovative, integrated audio designs, and increased ease-of-use for the end user.
