Abysmal CS:S Performance

I just bought HL2 and CS:S. During gameplay in CS I get roughly 30fps average with all of the settings turned off (including VSync) and all of the console tweaks I can think of @ 800x600. Is this the way it should be running with a comp like this:

Intel P4 2.8GHz HyperThreading
1024mb Corsair pc2800 ram
BFG GeForce 6800GT (with the latest beta drivers)
Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS Gamer

I have tried everything I can. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

As simple as this response sounds, this is most likely the case. The source engine is very cpu demanding. This is whats holding back my system also (3200+ xp). To test if your cpu limited or not, bump your screen resolution down a few notches. If you see little to no performance increase, your cpu-bound.

I understand that my cpu isn't up to par with the latest chips, but is it really bad enough to make it so I can barly reach 30fps with everything turned off? I could run Doom III on 1024x768 with ultra quality and never drop below 60fps (I know that Nvidia has an advantage with doom 3). Is there a command to enable Shader 3.0 or is it auto detected?

You should be getting better then 30 fps. I run at 1280x960 with the system in my sig and I get over 70 most of the time. I can't see a 2.8 bottlenecking it that much. How does Half Life 2 run? Maybe it's just a problem with CSS.

I can run HL2 @ 1024x768 with full settings (except for aa and af) with little to no problems and getting ~60fps constantly.

i got 3ghz p4 iwth 1 gig ram and a x800xt pe, not that much better, but i can play at max all and still get 91 fps

no its not your damn cpu , my friend has a p4 2.8ghz and runs it nice.. i have a amd xp 2600+ which is slower.. and i get 60-75 on a radeon 9700 pro AIW.

Hope This Helped ;)

that isn't what i understood you to say in your original post.

During gameplay in CS I get roughly 30fps average

i can walk around an empty map and peg 100fps all day long on my 9800xt/2.6p4, but that isn't really "gameplay". as soon as barrels and ragdolls start flying around i dip below 45.

Very much so, now all I need to do is fix whatever problem it is.

jesus freaking criminy people!!!
RANT
i swear, people actually claiming that he can't get better than 30fps because of a 2.8Ghz P4 holding him back.

freaking STUPID! ok, apparently some people are so concerned with reading about the latest and greatest, that they suddenly think a P4 2.8 is not capable of handling the AMAZING STRESS of calculating some physics in CS:S.

yes compared to a 6800GT a P4 2.8GHz may be the weak point of the system, but to claim that the cpu is the reason why he can't get above 30 fps at 800x600? obviously you have NO concept of what it takes to run that game.

TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTION
as always, check AA and AF settings, mobo chipset drivers, reinstall video drivers (removing previous ones with driver cleaner) and be sure there arent any programs running in the background slowing you down (spyware, viruses, ect) with msconfig (if you don't know, find out)

just don't listen to the fools saying your that "wimpy little processor" can't handle CS:S

Listen, I'm betting he is playing on the 35+ people servers. Even on my rig I get dips in maps like Chateau, sometimes as low as 25 fps.. However, in the normal 10v10 or 15v15 servers, I rarely, if ever go below 40fps.

Heavy firefights with a ton of people will bring any system to its knees, regardless of the resolution, AA/AF settings. I have been playing since the day CS S beta was released and this is a known issue. Also, type net_graph 3 in the console and look at your "choke". On servers that are not optimized, a high choke results in crappier FPS for everyone on the server. Optimally, your choke should be zero.

is this 30fps all the time? and its on low settings @ 800x600... bs.. u should be hitting a constant 100fps+ all te time.. except when lots of physics are messing up then it will drop.. but still... a 2.8ghz i way too fast to barely get 30fps... o yeah and check if 8xS is on in ur control panel..

Specs in sig. Before the OCing of the processor and 512mb RAM I could run it on med-high settings at 1280x1024.

Yeah... You arent getting 30fps due to your CPU.. At stock settings (I used to tweak with my 9600XT, but I dont need it with my 9800Pro) with my rig, I pull off 45-75fps constantly in CSS running everything at high detail, 1024x768 4xAA 16x AF, Im not quite sure whats wrong with your setup.. Although I have PC3500 ram, I doubt thats the culprit for you. I'd suggest seeing if you broke anything, ie driver conflicts...

Your shit is fucked up. Somethings going very wrong in that system.

good analysis of the situation, good recommendation on how to fix it.

I wouldn't believe that garbage about the CPU causing it, what i'd look for is perhaps updating your drivers, then seeing how that gets you.

If you can, tell us what drivers you are using on that thing, and then also what kind of servers do you typically play on.

Maybe try updating your bios or see what programs are running in the background. Cause that shit aint normal.

this is good to hear :) with all the talk about source being very cpu based etc. i was afraid my 2600+ would bottleneck it real bad. but your post has made me a bit happier :) also, what res/iq/aa/af do you run at?

im going to be upgrading to an X800Pro soon here and im hoping to be able to get around 60-80 in HL2...probably on 1680x1050 res (im probably getting a 2005fpw along w/ that card...or at least id like to haha) with high iq and maybe 2x/4x or something...

i do alot of rendering. im sorry to say nvidia doesnt do that great for this type of stuff. as to ATI rocks at it. the program i use has alot of liquid effects and nvidia doesnt handle it very well. i switched to ATI and it did the trick. i get 100+FPS with all settings on high. i borrowed a friends 6800Ultra card and put it in my comp and i got about half the performance i had with the ATI. maybe less. i know it certainly wasnt 50FPS. Nvidia just doesnt handle the water rendering very well. sorry i dont put it better. i dont know very many vocabulary words. but i have seen what both the cards do on this game and as for rendering liquid objects n stuff. everything is stock by the way. NO OCing

OK WELL I JUST HAD THIS PROBLEM GET Service-Pack 2 it should help trust me it worked for me GO DO IT MAN!

Have fun with that, I have a 2600+ @ 2.2GHz and an x800pro.. games run alright, but HL2 dips as low as 15frame per second sometimes. It's nuts, but there was only one spot that did that.. The CPU just doesn't cut it.

Its cuz you got 512mb RAM.

ZooCow...Check your chipset drivers, they might be installed incorrectly or they could be the wrong version.

lol it is not your CPU - (give me a break to all those responding with that) SP2 probably won't do a thing either. Check your AGP/Chipset driver like previously mentioned. Make sure you don't have the AA and AF jacked up to max on your D3D settings tab - make sure your water setting in game isn't on "Reflect All"

Check your Directx version. - what is it - and if you run DXDIAG from start, run - make sure all three DirectX features are enabled under the Display tab

I had the same problem that he had and nothing worked but when I installed SP2 it worked fine when I got rid of it it worked like shit again so I think SP2 should do it cuz it did the job for be now I don't get 30FPS no more only I get 100 hmmmmmm.........SP2

Ok sorry for taking so long.

1. I am using ForceWare 67.42
2. I play on servers with 10-20 people total
3. In the stress test I get about 90fps
4. I'm going to try reinstalling the drivers
5. I'm about to install SP2 so expect an update post.

Thanks for your help

Well I play CS:S on the rig in the sig and have zero problems, unless I'm on a 32+ map and we all run into the same area and the lead/nades/bodies start bouncing. That and the fact I'm new to the game :D Still I get above 50 even on most "crowded" servers, w/ reflect all on!

Incidentally I will pass on what you said to a guy who comes into my work. He switched from ATI to nVidia for pretty much same reason, but he does more all-around rendering, not just water effects. In his opinion: "ATI doesn't render worth a -expletive- for the "demos" I do." I'm not really sure what he means by demos, commercials maybe. It might be different if he had a higher opinion of DirectX too, but he thinks it's asinine compared to OGL. He was comparing programming notes for a simple to complex scene draw, and OGL took about 1/3-1/2 code to setup vs DirectX.

Mind you he's the graphics programmer, I just fix this stuff :p

After installing SP2 and reinstalling the forceware I now get 68 fps. I think I might have to reformat my computer, what do you guys think?

You get 68fps doing what? Standing still on a map or running the VST or running a timedemo?
