I've been looking around for a cooler to my Athlon 64 for awhile, currently I have a Zalman 7000Al-Cu, but it's too noisy and doesn't cool effectively (I think the main reason is that the base of it doesn't cover the entire IHS of the processor. I was debating between a bunch of heatsinks... what are your thoughts among them:

Swiftech MCX6400-V
Thermalright SLK-948U
Thermalright XP-120
Thermaltake Tower thing... don't remember the model#

Coolermaster Hyper series is much too loud...

XP-120 if it will fit on the mobo, XP-90 if it won't. :)

Wouldn't the 948 be more effective, since it's all copper, or do the heatpipes make THAT much of a difference.

the 948u is just a bit better. will it get you a higher overclock, no, just a degree or two cooler.............

I just want my cpu to quit overheating, think it will accomplish that?

um no...atleast not better then the xp-120,that thing like doubles the suface area and is like twice the size of thermalrights most effective copper sink the SP-97 and cool better i dont know about the XP-90 but if u really want copper hunt down a SP-97

my mistake the SP-97 is for athlon XP's they did have plans for a SP-98 fo the 939 socket but that was dropped because of the plans for the XP-120

XP-90 outperforms the SP-97 and the XP-120. The XP-120 is aimed at silent PC users, not power overclockers. I had quite an extensive email conversation with some techs at Thermalright and they recommend the XP-90 over all their products.

really? i still think even though its aimed at silent users would this not prove even further that it can acheive lower temps with the same fan vs the XP-90?

btw heres a camparason of a SP sink and the XP-120

edit- heres a nice chart comaring all the p4 heatsinks...most which have amd versions and the XP-90 is number one akuma was right http://www.overclockers.com/articles373/p4sum.asp

sp w/ tornado
dave did get really low temps with 5v tornado on tower 112... cant disagree that 100F on a 2.8 ghtz athlon xp @2v isnt appriciable

Yeah, this is very true. These fans really move and could definitely do some damage to a passing cat's tail.

SP what?
I'd hate to base it on what an athlon xp gets, the entire core touches the actual heatsink...
plus the Zalman owns on the P4... it sucks on here.

It doesn't list the XP-120... should I just assume that bigger = better?
I also have no idea why they rotated it 90dg, I think it looks like ass

you might have to rotate it.. heat pipes get in way of memory on some boards or caps or stuff like that

that review is totally worthless. they used different fans on each heatsink. of course a higher CFM fan on a heatsink is going to perform better than a lower CFM fan. i hate when they just use stock fans on heat sinks instead of using the same fan for all of them so you can truely know which heatsink is best at cooling. then let the consumer buy the fan that suits his/her needs.

they didnt happen to say if they plan on making an XP-120 dirrivitive to work on socket A did they?

I didn't ask, but since is has a such a limited amount of compatible motherboards for P4/A64, I highly doubt it. Most of the incompatibilities had to do with the cap placements. From what I seen, a lot of Socket A mobos have the caps placed very close to the socket.

Again, don't take this for fact. I really have no idea what they have planned. If you really want to know, just email the tech support. They're very friendly.

I don't think any of the SP-xx series works with the A64/Opteron, with the exception of the SP-98, which isn't really on the market.

XP-120 if it fits, XP-90 if it doesn't.

i may get bashed for this but , the gigbyte 3d coolers r killer on a64 chips , my a64 3000+ at 2205 runs at 37 loaded windows with a room temp at about 75f

the highest i ever seen it go was 42 on a hot day with heavy gaming and the hsf looks badass with the blue leds

i snagged it off the for sale thread for 20 bucks shipped!
