im about to be off to college and all my parts are coming in eitehr today or tomorrow....

except for the heatsink that goes on my cpu.

so is there anything i can do in lieu of that to start working on building it so i dont have to sacrifice time meeting people and stuff in order to come back home?

i dont have any extra heatsinks, and i do have extra fans.

the proc is a 35 Watt mobile barton 2200+ inside a gigantic antec sx1040bII with 2 rear fans and 1 front fan and a fan on the vcard.

so, any recommendations

So you'll have everything except the CPU heatsink?

I suppose you can mount the power supply and harddrives/optical drives in your case. I wouldn't put the motherboard in, as it's generally easier to put the chip and heatsink in before the motherboard goes in the case.

If you're asking if there's some alternative to using a heatsink, don't do it. You need decent cooling for the processor. Did you order the heatsink from a different website?

yah i was stupid and got it from CALIFORNIA when i could have gotten it from newyork from the same site i got my cpu fan...

the thing is, that processor can run realllly cool. i guess the heatsink is extremely important tho, i dont know :-\

but i was hoping to start getting the computer running without the heatsink.

but wouldnt it also be really hard to install a heatsink, thermal paste, and fan on a motherboard thats already inside?

your cpu can be the last thing to go into the pc.
so build it first, and then just plug in the cpu.
testing might take a while.

always start the testing by just powering up the cpu(and heatsink), mobo and ram (no drives)
that way, you know all three of the important components work.

but you can mount the drives first ( or the mobo first)
and then plug everything in even (except for the main power)

ps. little tip about mounting the heatsink if it has a clip
the clip usually has a slot at the top end (top being by the psu)
you can use a regular screw driver (thats big enough to partially fit through that hole)
that way, you use a bit of leverage to mount the heat sink, just make sure its aligned properly first.

DO NOT run the computer without a heatsink. if it was some old cpu like a k6-2 500mhz or a slot P2 or something it would probably be ok, but that cpu DEFINETLY needs a heatsink on it.

you could go ahead and install everything except the cpu into the case, then when the heatsink comes lay the case down on its side and slap the cpu>thermal grease>heatsink>fan in there and you will be good to go.
