About processor speeds...

Here is one thing i dont understand - Today I was reading a magazine that advertised some computer, and this is what it said:

Pentium 3.6GHz FREE UPGRADE to Core Duo 3.0 GHz

or something like that I cant remember exactly... the point is that somehow, 3.0 GHz is better than 3.6 GHz because it is an Upgrade!

my question is - How is it better, if the number is smaller :(

But then, why isnt there some other way to sum up all the things and define some arbitrary number... or set of numbers that define how well the processor functions? Obviously, this GHz is now totally redundant information because it is arbitrary in a sense...

Like... here is the thing... How Am I, as a consumer, to decide which computer is better now? Only part that can still be compared is the amount of RAM, and even that is now branching into some things i dont understand - 2Dimm, 2DIMM, 1DIMM etc, whatever that is. Same goes for video cards, where for example ATI Radeon 1300 is WORSE than ATI Radeon 950 even though the number is higher! And now the processor speeds too...

Can you see the dilemma?
 
its all a ploy by them to confuse the customer so its easier for dell and hp to rip you off...

That's why it's very important to do your homework and read around before you spend money on hardware. Browse around [H]ard and you'll pick it up after while.
 
anyone happens to know some alternatives to this process? Some good site dedicated to eplaining this stuff to normal mortals?
 
err.. google and I also manage to keep up to date with the Australian PC Authority (computer magazine) =)

There is. AMD processors have model numbers, 4200+, 4400+, etc. and Intels also have model numbers. For the newer dual cores it is 6600, 6700, 6800, etc.

The only problem comes in when you switch architectures and go to a new numbering system. Like going from Pentium D to Core 2. Pentium D processors were numbered something like 850, 860, etc. and Core 2 is 6600, 6700, etc. So if you are comparing different architectures you have to know which one is better otherwise you can follow the arbitrary numbers just fine.
