What are "good" temperatures on stock cooling for idle/load?

And, also on stock cooling, what are some good temperatures for specific clocks?

I also basically want to know what a good temperature is to stay below to not fry the card.
 
Just a word of warning here.

I bought a Sapphire X800XTPE in June of last year. Shortly thereafter I installed a Zalman ZM80D-HP HSF assembly. This took load temperatures down to 63c (had been 75c before). With this cooler I was able to use ATI Tool to find a stable overclock of 549/591.

Six months after this, the system completely out of the blue started to lock up hard in CS:S. I fired up ATI Tool and the artifact scanner would lock the system up hard after 5 minutes. I took the card back to stock speeds and it was fine.

My point is that overclocking can seem OK - the card may run stable for now. But it may also be slowly damaging it and the effects might not be readily apparent (ie, it seems fine).

I left my X800 at stock after that and it was OK. But clearly, overclocking was doing something to the card and it just took some time before it's effects showed. After that experience I refuse to overclock again - it's to risky.

YMMV I know. Some people have done this and never had that problem. Maybe it'll be fine for you. But maybe not...

YMMV I know. Some people have done this and never had that problem. Maybe it'll be fine for you. But maybe not...

I've found this is due to the thermal paste not transferring heat as well. I can't say I've ever had this problem, but it could be due to my frequent reapplication of thermal paste (I change parts a lot)
 
Hard to see how that would be the source of the problem when core temps remained low throughout the entire period I was overclocking the card. If the thermal paste was ineffective I would've seen a temperature increase on the core.

Hmm. That's pretty interesting then. I can't say I've ever had it happen to me. Some sort of signal leaking because of the shocking manufacturing process on the X800 cores? I don't know. It's worth looking into though...
