When one over-volts for overclocking, is the only variable to watch the temperature? And can I trust the nV MonitorView on the temps? I have my Opty 170 @ 1.6v and the temps aren't breaking 33C idle....it's also running @ 2.6GHz. Basically, can volts be cranked as high as you want as long as temps are kept down?

can't keep cranking the volts!
In fact, most people with good air cooling tend to leave their Opterons around 1.5-1.55 max. 1.6-1.65 could be fine for water and better cooling, but you'll need to wait and hear from some Opteron 165/170 owners.

Electromigration is what occurs when you pump too much voltage into a cpu, and that is what will bring it to a premature death. Mhz doesn't kill CPUs, voltage does.

Temperature is directly related to Watts consumed. if you supple your w/e with 12 amps at 12V, (144 Watts) and your only using 100 of those 144 watts, you literally have a hotplate that is rated at 44Watts.

yea and quadnads got it right, Electromigration, just an enduced charge (sorta like static electicity), and it will total a... anything... take your Vmod up slowly, and dont go for records, unless you have the money to blow away on another processer.

if you talk to an experianced person who says "i oced the crap outta my optie... and its now at 1.6V!" and your running 1.62, then tone it down.

Shows 1.55v in CPU-Z because I cranked it down. Is MSI's CoreCenter app accurate in terms of temps? Both nVMonitor and CoreCenter say that at 1.55v, the CPU idles at 30C.

you only need to up the voltage if it isnt stable, seeing as how you have made no mention towards stability, then chances are you are runing way to much v-core and can back it down lose some heat and gain some piece of mind

thore

I have problems in Age of Empires III and Prime95....downloading 3DMark06 now.

If you've got problems in Prime95, then more likely than not you'll run into issues in the future. Whats your htt/multi at?

HTT is at 260MHz, but I don't know where to go to lower it.

?!
How were you overclocking if you don't know where to lower the HTT?

Is your RAM running 1:1? If it is, that could very well be why it's prime unstable. I'd run it on the smallest divider your board has.

Well, it's a K8N Diamond Plus. However, the HTT is very confusing compared to the A8V Deluxe I was used to. There is more than one HTT setting. The HTTs are for the north bridge and south bridge. The defaults are 400MHz on both.....must research the K8N more....the manual doesn't say anything helpful.

I found the HTT multiplier (K8 to NorthBridge) and set it to 3x (600MHz). It was on "Auto" before...let's see if the problem was the HTT bus.

Just as a precaution, I'd suggest giving this guide a complete read before you continue doing any more oc'ing.

*bookmarks guide and reads*
Thanks....the A8V Deluxe was easy and simple compared to this K8N Diamond....grrrr
UPDATE: ClockGen DOES NOT WORK with my mobo, it does NOT change the FSB speed! CPU-Z reads the speeds wrong. It says CPU is 2GHz, when Windows says 1GHz (cause I lowered it per the guide), WTF is going on?
