? about mobo standoffs

I am converting an old phonograph/radio into a HTPC and have a coupe of questions. First I am going to make a mobo tray out of sheet aluminum and this will be thumbscrewed to the base of the case so it is removable. However my question is what size are the MOBO standoffs and where do I get a tap to thread for these. Second I am looking for some hinges sort of similiar to the ones on the stacked jewelry boxes that allow for the lid to move up and back slightly kind of slides back I guess hard to explain. However relly curious about the size and wehre to get a tap for standoffs. Thanks in advance.

Yah, sears should carry individual TAP and die sets. Not sure what size your gonna need, but Im sure you can figure it out easily
 
SAE and METRIC tap sets can be had at harbor freight for $8.99 (well worth it) on deal days. Which is like most days of the month.

Standoffs, radioshack.
 
No idea about the hinges.....sorry, wish I knew what you were talking about. :confused:

As far as the standoffs, the brass ones I have used on a couple project computers, including using aluminum sheet for a mobo tray, were # 6 screw thread, 32 threads per inch (aka 6-32 threads).

Like qtip said, harbor freight is great to buy from, if you have one nearby. Otherwise, any hardware store ought to have that size. Even tho you're tapping aluminum (pretty soft), make sure to lubricate your tap, so it'll last longer.

so 6/32 that is what i will keep an eye out for will peek on harborf freight site in a few. Familiar with them I am a woodworker and do have a full woodshop and some of the things they sell arent too bad on the other hand some of the things they sell are that bad. Let the buyer beware if uninformed btw. (Yes I own a few things from them that are great tools and some, not so much.) Thanks for the help. For the hinges i will have to figure out how to explain them.

I wish it was a piano hinge they are easy to find. Hmmm it is a piece of metal screwed to say a box and a parellel piece metal screwed to the top but offset a few inches. These two pieces are connected by two pieces that pivot on the bottom and top. When it is open the hinge moves say up two inches and away say 2 inches. Looks like a parellogram. I have seen these on jewelry boxes that have different tiers so when you open the box all of the layers stagger up and back. Dunno if that makes sense or not.

Yup didnt think about it but I am looking for tackle box like support. The hinge at rockler is kind of what I am looking for but that is for a box, a middle tier, and the box top. I just have the said box and a lid. Hmmm now to start looking.
