OK.

Got a couple MSI reference 2 GB 6950.
Going to flash them to the MSI 6970 BIOS from TechPowerUp.

Now.........the flash ups the shader count, that I know.
But does the flash also reset the GPU and memory clocks to 6970 stock values?
Or do I need to OR should I manually set those myself increments at a time?:D

The bios would set the clocks as 880/1375 which are stock 6970 clocks. I would advise against doing this because many people believe the 6970's ram has different timings and voltage from the 6950 ram even though it's the same chip. This does not effect performance but effects stability when using a 6970 bios on a 6950. I would instead just unlock the shaders on your 6950 to 1536 using any of the shader unlock methods found on techpowerup and then manually overclock to 880/1375 or higher using msi afterburner or something.

So after the flash and restart, I will then just Overclock as I would with Afterburner; that's sort of what I had thought.

Now.....I haven't had an AMD card for a litttle while, do you need to go into the Afterburner configuration file and manually set it to overclocks or is that old? You had to change a "0" to a "1" somewhere I believe?

Also I assume the new Afterburner works in Crossfire? When I had my 5870s it was broken?

I had no issues running afterburner in crossfire, and to allow overclocking over 840 on the core and like 1325 on the memory I had to edit the config file to allow unofficial overclocking.

Hopefully I can get some good results out of these cards.......the 2 GB of VRAM sold me for EyeFinity.

my question to you afterburner users, how do i keep the OC values because it seems if i close AB, the settings dont stay. once i do the AB config tweaking, the OC optoins dont show up in catalyst for me to manually change the clocks and save the settings

1) set your clocks as you want.
2) click "apply" in AB
3) then click "save"
4) the profile slots should be blinking, choose one slot to use. click it and then "lock" the profiles closed.

your OC should be applied when the computer starts, providing you have clicked off apply at start.

You cannot have the CCC Overdrive AND AB enabled at the same time as far as I know.

Just use AB to run your card.
 
i ask because its a replicable problem that BFBC2 (which i spend 90%+ of my gaming time on), namely punk buster, likes to hard-crash the rig when any gpu monitoring app is on (AB, gpuz, etc). i know to apply/save/start with windows and all that good stuff on AB, but the way i know the saves arent completely saved is because (while its on auto) the fan speeds change after the program is exited. even after reboots and all that junk.

Then just use the CCC to overclock the card.
You can change the limits in CCC much the same way you can in AB.....
"unofficial overclocking" somewhere in the AMD local files.

Magoo, you can also consider doing what I've been working on, Today I backed up and customized my own bios in RBE (Radeon Bios Editor) and flashed it on my cards. RBE is also available from techpowerup. Pretty easy to use and alot of instructions and forums to help you along the way. This way you can unlock shaders, find your max stable overclock, desired fan profile, and then flash that as a permanent bios setting so you don't have to fiddle with afterburner for your clock values and fan profile.

This is taking it to another level altogether but it's not that hard.

I'll give it a read and see what I think. That sounds like a great solution to having to deal with a second software package to up the clocks (AB). Although AB is pretty easy....even I can do it.:D

Does Afterburner allow the card to downclock when idle on the newer versions? Haven't tried it with mine yet, still using Sapphire Trixx since it works there.

I have AB running currently on two systems with nvidia cards, same driver version and same AB version....2.10.
On my GTX 260 SLI system the clocks do not go down in 2D.
In my GTX 580 SLi system the clocks do go down in 2D and increase to my settings in 3D.
I can't remember what they did when I had my ATI 5870s.
 
How do you unlock the shaders without using a 6970 bios? I unlocked mine but would prefer to keep the memory at the stock 6950 1250MHz rating.

Don't you have to use both MSI afterburner and CC overdrive so you can set the powertune to 20% to handle the OC's?

That's what I do...

You get HD 6970 shaders, normal voltages and timings for the memory, and a small bump in the GPU VCore.

The BIOS is from ASUS, so you will then use SmarDoctor to increase the ceilings in Overdirve abd don't need any other software.

I did it last night and it works like a charm. I now have two cards flashed to 6970 shaders running 840/1300 with room to spare.:D

With AMD cards if you save your stock clocks as the 2D profile, then it should downclock.....works for my 5850.
 
use stealth mode in AB osd server under detection level. it got rid of hard lockups in bc2 multi for me.

The guide from ExtremeSystems is very well written and easy,easy to use.
I had my cards flashed in less then 30 minutes once I got a bench board set-up.

The SmartDoctor software is a little wonky, but it does work to enable an over-ride of the limits placed on the 6950 in the CCC.

I easily got my 6950s to stock 6970 with full shaders, as advertised.
