i just purchased this motherboard the other day, and i was going to use it with my AMD Athlon XP 2000+ for the time being. ive been having computer problems and i am starting to upgrade everything one at a time until the problem is resolved. i was wondering what a good processor for this would be if mine turns out to be bad. id like to stay as close to $100 as possible...thanks for any help, heres the link for the mobo

If I remember correctly the NF-7S2 (not to be confused with the NF-7S revision 2) may not have the multiplier adjustments needed to utilize the xp-mobile. Two completely different motherboards.
 
yeah the NF-7s2 is not one of abit's better efforts, I had a NF-7S rev 2, and it rocked with a XP-M 2400 at 11.5 x 220 on water. Kept the whole room warm too :) for that board, get the regular desktop barton, the one cited above is perfect.
 
it says it supports AMD Sempron technology... this processor is new to me. should i stay away from it? what about the Barton?
 
ive been having problems with this board these last few days, AGP video card in but no signal being sent to my monito... ive plugged in the monitor to another computer and it works fine. been told that if my video card was bad, i would hear a beep, which im not. might go get a new video card just to be sure, but i was looking at this cpu+mainboard combo instead of the NF7-S2. is this a step up or step down? i know the processor is a step up from my athlon xp 2000+...http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1197962&Tab=0&NoMapp=0
 
The Via KT600 chipset on that board would be a step down from Nvidia NForce2. (granted the NF7-S2 is an NForce2 board but the implementation sucks...even the biggest Abit fan should be able to admit that)

If you HAVE to buy from TigerDirect you might look at either of the MSI K7N2 boards.

Personally I'd buy from Newegg and get either an Abit NF-7S revision 2 or Abit AN7. They sell quite a selection of NForce2 boards, I'm sure others will chime in with their experiences with the most stable ones.

The socket A Sempron is basically an Athlon XP with half the L2 cache. It's not a bad cpu by any means.

As for the troubleshooting goes, have you tried the video card in question in another computer? The RAM? Power Supply? Clearing the CMOS? If you go through the problems and steps already taken to troubleshoot somebody here might be able to point you in the right direction. It might even be something cheap to fix. ;)
 
The NF7-S2 is a great board for a non overclocker, it has some nice newer features, and newer revision of the chipset, and runs cool.. In stock CFG, its runs just as fast as any other good Nforce2 board... (there Nf2ultra chipsets right?)

Overclocking on it sucks because missing multiplyer, 2 phase power, so FSB overclcoking, well you can but it dosnt go far. But that not what it was made for.

My sugestion is pair it with that 2800+ listed above for 82 bucks. Id jsut on that, as bartons are dissapearing fast, If you gonna stan socket A and not overclcock then id get my hands on a higher marked barton wile you still can...dont get a sempron...

That 2800+ is a great CPU, but you will need a HS for it... the stock one on your 2000+ will not be good enough..
 
well i wanna buy from a retailer because im trying to troubleshoot my computer issues, been having alot of them recently. so im working my way up... new mainboard, then processor and so on until i have a working computer again. i went today and purchased a new video card and it still didnt work. i bought a ATI radeon 9550 AGP 8x/4x and monitor still wont show anything. ive cleared the cmos many times, i have a brand new PSU (Antec 350w) ive re-installed the cpu a few times making sure it was seated. i have 4 memory sticks i have been interchanging in different sockets but that still hasnt done any good. so now its time to send the motherboard back to tiger. id like to get a mobo+chipset combo, usually cheaper then buying things seperate.
 
I SWEAR!!!! well i removed everything boxed it all up ready to go back...wasnt satisfied that i did everything i could so i took it back out and benched it again... Plugged everything in, made sure the cpu and HS was seated properly, benched it on the box before installing it in the case. turn it on and a few seconds later i get the two tone seirn... ive reseated the cpu and HS 3-4 times now, each time removing the old thermal compound with 99% alcohol and reapplying the compound. everything is brand new except CPU which is 6months old and the case... ive installed three differnet sticks of ram in different slots and still the same beep. the 4 pin atx cable is attached and i have cleared the cmos more times then i can count.. ive run outta ideas
