I installed the dangerden NB waterblock on my ABIT IS7-G mobo, and a few days afterwards I hear a "poing!" and my computer powers down. I look in my window and see my new block hanging by a thread! The springs on the retention hooks were too strong, I thought, and they pulled off two retention loops from my board. Well after some research on a few forums (including ABIT's) I find that its a common problem, and not just with the IS7 either. Peeps with other kinds of ABIT P4 boards (IC7, BF7, ect.) have this problem too. And not just with aftermarket blocks!!! The stock fans were pulling out the loops too. So I thought why not spread the word about how to fix this apparently common problem?
As ghetto as it sounds, the fix involves a paperclip. What you do is get a smaller sized paperclip, the good kind not the flimsy kind that snaps when you bend it, and bend it into shape. If youre looking at a paperclip, there are three corners. Top corner, bottom corner, and the inner bend corner. That smaller inner bend is almost exactly the same size as the stock loop. Cut the paperclip to where the inner loop and its tails are all that remain. If youve got the right size clip you can just push it through the stock motherboard retention loop holes. Bend the tails together underneath the board, forming a closed loop, and clip off all excess. Check the metal tails very carefully to be sure you arent shorting anything out. Gratz, you just fixed your board!
While this process sounds like total crap, Ive replaced two of my clips in this way and its holding that dangerden waterblock on just fine. That was two weeks ago and its still going strong. I found it much nicer than RMA'ing the board because...Ive had a computer for these two weeks instead of a computer shaped paperweight. In addition, the paperclips dont make any permanent modifications to the board, so if you are carefull you could keep your waranty.
