Hello,

I am a n00b to posting topics on this forum. I am looking for information on the KT880-based Abit KW7 motherboard.

I believe it's a pretty new board and reviews/comments on this unit are hard to find. I was wondering if anyone on this message board had anything to say about it. From the little info I have found, it looks to be a nice board, definite competitor w/ those boards using the nforce2 chipset. The main reason I want to upgrade from my current motherboard (an abit kr7a-133r) is because I need 8X AGP. I've been using VIA-based boards for several years and would prefer to stick with them if it's a viable alternative and provides similar performance. Any further info on this subject would be much appreciated.

Unfortunatly, since its release over 2 years ago (sigh.. the board in my sig is over 2 years old), there hasn't been a chipset to lay the smackdown upon the nForce2.

By the time the KT880 hit the market, the enthusiest community had lost interest in the SocketA platform, and has since moved on to bigger & better things (i.e. Athlon 64's on the nF3 & nF4 platform).

First of all, you don't need 8x AGP. Nobody does. It gives you no tangible real world performance benefits over 4x AGP. Don't worry, the 8x card you're probably about to buy thats making you want an 8x board will work on your current board.

If you upgrade your board, you will need new ram- the SDRAM that your current board uses went out of style many years ago. Heck, while you're at it, i'd suggest an upgraded processor... but the Athlon XP/Sempr0n line is not a great value compared to an Athlon 64 2800+ @ 135 USD.

The Aw7 that you're looking at will probably work just fine for you, but I beleive it will be an overall poor value for your money.
 
my current machine has ddr 266/266fsb so its not like i have to buy new ram/cpu right away. it's an abit kr7a w/ athlonxp 2400+ t-bred.

i was looking at a board to upgrade to that has dual channel ddr, 400fsb, and a bunch of other goodies as well as 8x agp so that i can run some of the newer games with ease. the video card i have purchased is an x800. also apparently the kt880 chipset is slightly better than the nf2-ultra400 chipset in performance.

the k7 may have lost the interest of the bleeding-edge enthusiast community, but for the basis of a very good gaming machine, i have heard nice things of the kt880.

i have not been able to find a lot of info on this particular abit board, though. i have seen reviews of the asus counterpart, but being that i have used abit boards for many systems i'm sorta partial to them.

p.s. poor value? it's 60 bucks! and faster than nforce chipset! how is that poor value?

I would appreciate it if you claim to be a n00b to posting in this forum to lay off the offensive comments and cut-downs. I was simply offering an opinion (and a rather fine one at that) for the question that you posed. This makes me rather unmotivated to provide you with a detailed cost/benefit analysis of your purchases, so I will... err... talk out my hind quarters some more (that you will be able to find proof of in reviews accoss the internet).

Item 1: The performance difference between 4x and 8x AGP is nil. AKA 0% AKA Nothing. This means upgrading your board to get 8x agp (given the same parameters), you will acheive no benefit, but experience a cost.

Item 2: Dual channel DDR over single channel DDR (see the review of the A7N8X-X at www.lostcircuits.com) is a rather minute difference- about a 3% real world benefit.

Item 3: Yes, the newer chipsets, whether they are the KT880 or nF2 are better performers than the KT266 chipset, but I do not beleive that it is going to give you a performance boost that is worth $60 of your green.

Item 4: Other high value solutoins: an A64 2800+ can be found for under $130 now and a board for it to run in can be found starting at $56. This results in an A64 setup, using your same RAM, will give you a huge performance boost that simply changing your motherboard will be able to accomplish. I beleive you would have a better overall experience with your upgrade if you shelled out the higher amount of money, given the benefits that you will see.

Schro my compliments :D U must not only have the Geekiest Ass around but also the smartest since U manage to squeeze some really good advice out of it. (I know what I manage to get out of my Ass and is most worth shit...) :D

And Yupp Drew Id do what the man tells U since he IS speaking the truth. The only thing U need to have is the AGP 3.0 (i.e. 1.5V AGP) to run the card. whatever card U buy will not be limited by the 4x AGP but of the CPU anyways.
