Abit IP35-E + E8400 overclocking help

Ok guys I have this mobo/cpu combo and I have been searching high and low for a solution to my problem but I have yet to find a solution. I overclocked my E8400 with E0 stepping from 3ghz to 4ghz (445fsb) and a 1:1 ratio so my 800mhz memory is at 890mhz. I have the most recent BIOS flashed. When I go to play games I can play for about 30 minutes then I will get random freezes. Computer specs are in my sig. Heres some added information.

Core voltage: 1.35v
MCH voltage: 1.41v
ICH : stock
VTT: stock
Memory: 2.05v (stock is 1.9v for corsair xms2 800mhz)

I am running 4 x 1GB sticks of RAM.

If you know of any threads or if you have information that would help it would be greatly appreciated, I don't know whats wrong other than the 4 sticks might be making it so i need more MCH voltage. Thanks!
 
Did you try loosening the ram timing? Try something like 5-5-5-18 (newegg says XMS2 is 4-4-4-12).

This is the RAM I have, its timing is 5-5-5-18 right now. I tried loosening the timings to 6-6-6-18, but it wouldnt even boot after that, I'm not very experienced when it comes to RAM timings. I see theres more than just those 4 in there. I'm definately guessing it is my RAM because the MCH has more than enough voltage to supply the RAM since it can run Prime95 for about 40 minutes before freezing, if it was a voltage problem I would think it would BSOD or freeze within a minute if not right away. So maybe my RAM just isn't happy at 890mhz with those timings.

Boosted VTT to 2.3v. I tried running each test in Prime95 for 30 minutes each, but I kept getting a hardware failure error? So I just did a normal test and its running and was running longer than the other tests I tried running longer so maybe it was just the settings. I won't know the results until later when I get home, but how exactly would VTT help in my situation? I heard only the quads needed VTT to be increased.
 
Honestly, you could be at the point where your MCH just doesn't like that speed. I know when I had the IP35 Pro, it didn't like to go to 400 MHz FSB. Also, your CPU may just need more voltage. Just because one CPU may achieve 4GHz @ 1.35 doesn't necessarily mean yours will too...try 1.4V. When you run Prime95, to isolate your CPU from memory, just run Small FFT's. If you are locking up or having round off errors, then it's most assuredly a Vcore issue.
 
I guess I should've tried that to see if it was CPU. And yes I know some chips need less or more voltage than others, just saw that one shouldn't go above 1.37v with the wolfdales. Atleast thats what I've read numerous times. I'll update when I get home to see if it crashed during that last stress test. I hope I just need a little bit more vcore along with the upped VTT to solve this problem. Do some MCH just not like to go above 400mhz FSB regardless of the voltage? Because I had it at 1.51v for a little bit seeing if it was lack of voltage, but I had the same freezing issue. And if your wondering I do have a 60mm fan I ghetto rigged onto the NB to cool it.

Coming back to the timings thing, theres CAS Latency Time(tCL), RAS# to CAS# Delay(tRCD), RAS# Precharge(tRP), Precharge Dealy(tRAS), Refresh Cycle Time(tRFC), Write Recovery Time(tWR), Write to Read Delay(tWIR), Act to Act Time(tRRD), Read to Precharge(tRTP), and Command Rate. I thought there was only 5 options for timing (example: 5-5-5-15-2T). Any idea what those other ones should be set to? If i change anything or just one and leave the rest on auto it won't even post.

I saw where you loosened up the ram timings on your memory but have you considered changing the command rate? ie. running 2T vs 1T

I couldn't loosen the timings. Every time I try and chance those settings listed above it won't post causing me to reset the CMOS. I keep getting a hardware error when running any tests that involves lots of RAM. Would you know how to change all of those settings because theres 10 now instead of the normal 5 that I am used to.

Honestly, I've only ever changed CL, tRCD, tRP, and tRAS. I have never bothered to fully learn about ram timings. I just knew that everyone changes the aforementioned values for performance and left it at that. I found out that I had to change the command rate on my ram when I added an additional 2 sticks. Before doing so, I tried loosening the timings way up to make my computer stable but it that wasn't working. I eventually found out about changing the command rate from 1T to 2T when using all 4 dimm slots and it worked great.

When I noticed you were running 4 dimms and having issues, I thought it would probably be related to the memory. Try searching in google for "ram timings" or "memory timings" that may lead you to a good article that explains how the values are related to each other. Also, make sure your ram isn't overclocked while you're trying to sort out the memory. That way you are eliminating at least 1 variable up front. Once you get the entire system stable, then go back and work on bumping the memory speed up.

I am OCed to 3.6ghz right now completely stable. That would be, 800mhz on the RAM because I'm using a 1:1 ratio. And I have searched it but everyone only talks about the ones you mentioned. I'll try 3.8ghz with memory at 840mhz and see what happens.

stable at 840mhz, its definately the RAM not liking being at 890mhz. Thats not that big of an OC I would think especially for corsair. If only I could actually get the timings loosened maybe then it would work properly. Guess its time to search for BIOS 18 timings for my motherboard. Not Stable at 860mhz either :(. My G.Skill 5-5-5-15 800mhz OCed to 1066 without voltage change, I figured corsair would do just as good.

Ok, update I finally found a timing combo that works, my ram stock is 5-5-5-12 so i changed it to 5-6-6-15. I'm OCed at 445 FSB (890mhz ram) just to see if it will handle my max OC right off the bat. So far one test was completed without errors which is a good sign because before it would fail within 3 seconds. Things are looking up!

Update: Computer has been running stable for over an hour playing games and stress testing in between. Before it would crash atleast once every 30 mins. Guess everything is solved :)!
