Abit AV8 Cooling Issues

Hi

Just got a AV8 and a Cooler Master hyper 6 HSF. Had a right royal pain in the ar%e gettin git to fit. If anyone is going this route i suggest get a differrent HSF unit. There are resistors and chip under two of the feet when attached as per the instruction and the only way to make it fit is via taking a file or hacksaw to the mounting uit. Also the pressure that is require to get it to fit is just stupid. Very scarey instal for a brand new mobo and chip. especially when the 939 and 3500 cost so much anyway. Avoid.

On the subject of the AV8 has anyone got one and do there temp go all over the place in uguru app. not reliable and really cant push the cpu as hard as i want yet cos i dont trust the temps. Anyone got the 1.3 bios that anandtech used,cant find it anywhere.

I just picked one of these up with a 3800+, and uGuru's heat alarm went off this morning (recovering PAR2 files). I got the retail CPU from mwave.com, so it should have the stock HSF attached (the one I have says "CoolerMaster" on top, so I'm not sure if it's the real stock fan). Either way, uGuru's temps look *really* high to me. It's reporting 60 CPU/65 PWM, but only 34 ambient. Good to know that I'm not the only one who's a bit leery of uGuru's temperatures.

That said, it got me worried enough to look into a new HSF. I was looking at the hyper 6, so I appreciate your warning.

I am absolutely posotive the temp are way off because they fluctuate way to much. Since installing the machine i have restarted it loads of times in quick succession to install stuff etc. And the figures i am getting are just all over the place, this is with the same setup obviously each time. Sometimes it boots showing 30c idle other times around 45. This is with the hyper6 on full blast and at near stock speed ie the 205 bus speed the av8 gives is just silly. No way it can be accurate. I hope that the 1.3 bios that anandtech were using sorts it out they didnt mention the problems we are getting so here hoping. And yeah i absolutely would not recommend the hyper6 on this mobo horrid to put on. Had to file the mounting a load to miss various tiny chip and resistors and even then it is partly fouled by some caps close to the socket. All around nightmare install.

Anyway if you find the 1.3 bios which i guess is a beta cos it aint up on any abit site drop us a line.

I ordered myself a Swiftech MCX6400-V today, and it should be here by next Tuesday. From everything I've seen, this one should fit nicely (it completely replaces the plastic mounting bracket).

The temps on my board aren't all over the place like yours, unfortunately, so I think they may be accurate, or at least close to it. The thing is idling at just under 60C, and that's just not good. I have a feeling that mwave may have botched something on the HSF install, but I'm replacing the whole unit just to be safe. Hopefully I'll be able to close up the case again when all is said and done.
 
There are known issues with the AV8 and incorrect temp readings. Temps are usually 20c higer than actual. I have an v 1.1 AV8 w/ 3500+ and one day my idle temps will be 26 and load 47 and the next reboot they are 20c higher for both. I would expect a fix int the next bios. It sucks having an incorrect reading though. There are a few posts on this:

As long as your system is stable I wouldn't worry about it.
