AA Problems with 8800GTX

OK, I'm currently using Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit with the 158.45 drivers.

In the Nvidia control panel, I set AA to 8x and made it "override application settings." Things were fine for a while (mostly because I turn on AA in-game too), but when I loaded up Oblivion with HDR on and AA off, I noticed that there were a lot of jaggies. I checked the Nvidia control panel and AA was still set to override application settings. So I tried it in Supreme Commander (turning AA off in-game) and AA wasn't working. This happened with all my other games too. However, when I turn AA on in-game, then AA works (obviously), but only at whatever level I set it in game. So, my "override application settings" in the Nvidia control panel is functioning like "use application settings." I tried the other modes like "enhance application settings" and they work properly.

I've uninstalled the drivers, used driver cleaner, and reinstalled the 158.45 drivers. I also tried the WHQL 158.25 drivers, but the Nvidia control panel AA settings still don't apply in-game. Any help on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated.

I can't explain why some games behave like you describe and others don't; however suffice to say, in my experience too, they do. I don't believe you have a problem with your card or your drivers. Someone else more informed than me will most probably be along in a minute to offer a proper explanation :)

Override = Will do that setting no matter what
Enhance = Will bump up your current AA to your setting. AA MUST be turned on to at least 2x however.

I just explained it in another thread here, but for Oblivion, setup a new program setting and set it to Override for AA.

I did set the Nvidia Control Panel to override application settings (and I set AA to 8). However, it doesn't seem to be doing it in the game. I set Oblivion's game profile to follow the global settings too (so override application with 8x AA), but the jaggies are still there.

The problem is that the "override" function isn't working and the card's just applying whatever settings the game has when "override application settings" is selected.

EDIT: Just to clarify, the "override" setting in the Nvidia Control Panel doesn't work in any game.

Did you create a new game profile for oblivion (and sup com) and apply settings in that, or find the existing pre-defined one and modify that?

If you created your own could there be two profiles pointing to the same exe with differing AA settings?

OK, just to update: it seems that regardless of what AA settings I apply in the Nvidia Control Panel (besides off), the card only applies in-game settings. If anybody has any idea why it's doing this, please explain it to me because I haven't a clue. :(
