AA+HDR

I wasn't aware that the HDR implementation was really a dynamic range interpolation to 24 bit... I guess that changes things a little bit. I did see a small bit of the HL2 HDR comparison video at E3. It looked different, I guess better, but the improvement it gave didn't seem worth the performance hit and quality hit with respect to no AA...

I see lots of comments about how xx type of HDR works with xx type of AA... so is it possible to get some kind of HDR and some kind of AA working at the same time with good framerates on the 7800GTX?

Here with 1gb ram, an athlong 64 3800+ and two 7800gtx in sli.... can you think of adding in hdr into this????
see the drop from 4aa to 8aa, when the super sampling kicks in....

well its my opinion that you shouldnt need 8AA at 1600x1200. You'd really need to be obsessive. Once you add HDR im sure everyone of the scores with AA and AF levels such as those get crushed.

Im really hoping ATI figures out a way to bring Temporal AA over for HDR so users of their cards wont need high AA to remove jaggies.

Temporal AA on ATI cards : 2X Temporal AA = 4AA effective; 4TAA = 8AA, 6TAA=12AA, etc at lossless performance. So you'd get the performance of a game with 2X enabled but at the quality levels of 4X. I think something like this would really benefit with HDR if the AA version used were compatable.

Currently requiring an already rather stressful version of AA that can be used with HDR and thats it, is unacceptable. HDR already crushes performance enough that both companies really need to look elseware if they want AA levels with it.

When you see it in games you'll think otherwise. Did you watch any of those game demo videos from E3? Most of them employed HDR, the games looked incredible.

Yea seen the videos, played far cry with HDR and sorry still would rather have AA. I have been use not to seeing jaggies ever since I got that V5 and have my eyes trained for over the last 4 years to recognized good AA. Now anything else is a step back... IMHO of course :)

I don't think Far Cry is a very good example of HDR.
First of all the game itself is not all that pretty (not up to the standards of Doom3 or HL2, if you ask me)... Secondly, they really overdone the effect. You get that a lot when new effects are introduced. They are emphasized way too much, so that it's really apparent that the effect is used, but the actual goal of creating a more realistic environment is missed.

HL2 is a good example of using technology in a realistic setting. Things really look like a real world. Not overly shiny objects and extra bright lights and super dark shadows etc. No, you get rusty, dented stuff, with slight reflections only on some parts etc...
It's really great, but if you don't look, you'll miss it. That's the thing with realistic things, you're used to seeing them, so they don't attact your attention.

oh, ok, because i found that in far cry that it was pretty, but too dark and too bright
however i don't like the look of this thing when you run outside, and it is very bright... realistic yes, but could detract from gameplay, rather like the doom 3 flashlight scenario.
also, i find that half life 2 looks better than doom 3 anyway, as doom 3 is so blocky in places, esp. heads.

Doesn't Quake Wars use the Doom3 engine?

I would not consider FarCry a good example of HDR, it's only a beta implementation and way overblown. SC:CT uses HDR much better, and it looks like HL2's Lost Coast will also be impressive. With the G70 I can run SC:CT at 16x12 so there is less aliasing, I'm willing to bet you'll be able to play HL2 at super high rez with HDR as well.

quake wars uses a heavily modified version of the doom engine, with massive outdoor levels (doom 3 engine was not designed for) and it has mega texture (level streaming) and NO BLOCK HEADS...
looks damn good actually, however apart from that i find that all of the doom 3 engine games look the same... prey, doom 3, quake 4...
