AA and Tooltips equal super slow refresh

I recently found that when playing EQ in a window, the refresh came to a crawl if a tooltip came up (among other things) on the desktop.

After looking at various things, I remembered I'd turned on AA (because EQ won't do it, even though it supports it).

Once I turned off AA, the problem was solved. My question is, why does it cause a problem?

I'm using an X800XL, and having the AA on has minimal impact on framerates. IS there some other setting that I could change that would allow me to leave AA on and not have to worry about some 2D event happening that kills the refresh (it drops to 1fps....maybe less).

Any ideas are appreciated. I know this isn't the latest and greatest card, but EQ isn't exactly a demanding game.
 
Hmm interesting. I get the same thing with EQ2 and my 1900XTX. When I turn on AA, the game gets really choppy. It's very annoying.
 
Does anyone else have this issue? Does anyone NOT have this problem?

I wonder if this is only a problem with ATI or if Nvidia has the problem too. If both, then it's probably an issue with EQ or perhaps XP -- I don't play other games in a window very often.

I'll seend you a PM so you see this, but I have the solution.

You need to go to your catalyst control center and turn on vsync....or if it's not there (I've never noticed it),

1. left click on the ATI icon in the system tray
2. Click your video card (if 2 are listed, pick the first (not the secondary)).
3. Click 3d settings
4. Click "Wait for Vertical Refresh"
5. Click on "Always On" (or if it's always off, you can try Default to on, but let app pick) and
see if that works.
 
I fixed that problem with mine by turning off both temporal antialiasing and vsynch.
