Is it better to control your AA and AF settings at the driver level (IE: the control panel for your card) or always have these set to application controlled and use the settings in games?

game first, if the game doesn't have the options then control panel
I've always done this myself, but does anyone know why it's better?

the game content developer knows what to apply AA and AF to and on what texture levels

the control panel will just force things, sometimes things that aren't meant to be forced

Game first, especially for some titles.

Interestingly, here's an example in which I ran into this lately with my graphics programming. In my demo, I had to render to one offscreen surface with AA, and then another without AA. As a result I have to create 4 surfaces: 2 coloured surfaces, and 2 depth surfaces (aka z-buffer), one of each being made for AA and one with no AA (for the hardcore techies: yes, I know that isn't exactly how it works, but that's the gist). Anyways, something alarming came to light when I tried this. At the time, I had my Catalyst drivers set to force 6xAA, and one thing I didn't anticipate was that the noAA depth surface WASN'T being created the way I wanted it to be. Because the drivers were, apparently, forcing AA for all created depth surfaces, my rendering had an error (Direct3D will not allow a person to render to an AA'd depth surface and a non-AA'd colour surface at the same time) and I now have to control all AA inside the program, and driver configuration literally breaks the program (until I figure out how to override those settings).

Will multisample and surpersample in NV, CP work with in game AA ?

YES definately unless there is something in the engine that prohibits the mode in the first place.

I uses SS all the time forced from the driver panel, yet use the BF2 AA AF settings ingame.

I always force AA + AF through the drivers, is there a performance difference between the two forms of AA + AF ?

Anyone know if in Half Life 2 if you enable the TSAA in the game or through teh drivers config?
