So, I finally got around to building a new PC and I'm having some problems. When installing World of Warcraft, I keep getting an error about one of the .mpq files on the CD being corrupt. Now, if I remove one of my sticks of memory and try the install, it works just fine. After the install, I can replace the RAM and run the game with no issues. ..

However...when I install Norton Systemworks, reboot, run liveupdate, reboot, it tells me that norton is corrupt and that I need to reinstall. I've tried with both 2003 and 2004. Occasionally, AIM becomes corrupted, also.

I've seen other people on the blizzard forums with the same dual channel problem. As long as they don't run dual channel, it runs fine.

Here's my setup:
A8N-SLI Deluxe
A64 3500+
MSI GF6600GT x2
MAxtor 300GB SATA (16mb cache, 7200RPM)
Corsair Pro series DDR466 2x512
Audigy
Plextor DVDRW
Ultra X-Connect 500W PSU

The only idea that I have is that the memory isn't matched and that's causing problems in dual channel mode. I went with the two 512s of 466 because it was only $95 from outpost...

Does anybody have any ideas? I'm afraid that I might be spending some extra $$ on a TwinX kit, soon...

EDIT: I know both sticks are good, because they ran in my old PC (Abit KD7, 2200+) for a few weeks before I put the new one together, and they passed the M$ mem tester.

I had that motherboard and it was plagued with problems....however, i dont think thats your problem this time. I had 2x512 OCZ Platinum Rev.2 memory and it worked like a dream on that board and it got one of the highest overclocks on that board from anyone. I had 245 fsb with the memory at 1:1 ratio and 1T at 2.5-3-3-7 settings. If i were you, id look at my memory settings and loosen them a tad. I was able to run my memory at stock at 2-2-2-5 with no problems, but others with TCCD memory had to run at stock at 2-3-2-5, in order to get things stable. That board is REAL picky on memory. If you get fed up with the board eventually, exspecially when you start overclocking and realize that 245 is the limit anyone can get, i would sugest going to MSI or get what i got....DFI Ultra -d and you will never look back. Im at 275fsb for everyday use. My memory is at 550 at 1T and im rock stable. My processor is also at 3.0 on air! I spent more money than god on my A8N-SLI, i got it back in early december, and although i finally got all the problems worked out, when it came down to it, being stuck at 245 fsb for the money i paid was a crime and i hopw for youe sake and for the sake of others(like the guy i sold the board to) that ASUS doesnt come out with a new revision of the A8N-SLI and fixes some of the problems still current with a new bios release. Now, if i were you i would loosen the timmings a tad and make sure i had the newest bios out. I hope you get everything worked out!!

I can't remember what the timings are at...I haven't adjusted them yet, since most of my trouble shooting has been done via RDP from work.

I think they were at 3-5-5-8, but I can't verify because I just installed SP2 and forgot that it turns the firewall on by default...therefore I'm locked out of my PC until I go home tomorrow night...sweeet.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll prolly end up buying/borrowing ram to test with.

Yeah, i got your back with this board.......I had SOOOOO many problems at first it wasnt even funny, but slowly but surly i got threw them and it turned out to be an excellent board. I just want to overclock the memory i bought(OCZ Platinum Rev.2, TCCD) and 245 fsb wasnt cutting it for me other wise i would have kept the board. Now i hear that Asus is already making a 2nd revision........if they do and dont fix the problems they still have, i will never go Asus again, and i love Asus. Post back and ill help as best i can from my experience.

Cool, thanks man. As soon as I get home and start looking at things, I'll post more. I probably should have spent a little more time doing my homework before I went out and bought the board. Meh, live and learn.

Just to add, I had a lot of problems with the ASUS board also (just ask Tripp17 about all of my bitching over NCQ drives sometime. ;) ). For the record, I have 2 x 512 mb sticks of Corsair PC3200 XMS XL Pro, the stock latency is 2-2-2-5, but I had to run at 2-3-2-5 even at stock speeds just to be stable on that board, I'll confirm that it seems a bit touchy with memory.

Well the memory controller is in the processor now... Personally I don't know if I can blame memory compatibility problems on the mobo anymore.

Any luck yet or are you still having problems? If so, post back and well all give it a go. Good luck!

Well, I just got home from work and I'm working on it.

I ran CPU-Z and checked the speeds. It told me that my memory was at 232, but Asus Ai says it was at 200. Regardless, I went into the bios, and changed the memory speed from auto to 200mhz. WoW just installed with no problems. I'm going to install a few other things to see what happens, and I'll let you all know.

My timings are all on auto, and at 3-3-3-5.

Ok. So I install WoW, no problems. Install norton, and starts to blue screen like crazy.

I checked Corsair's website, adn supposedly, this memory runs at 3-4-4-8, at 466. Since I'm running at 400, I assumed I could make the timings a little better...I thought they were better to start with. I supposed I should have looked first.

Anyway, I went with 3-3-4-8 for now, and its running OK. I'm gonna tweak it a bit and see what happens.

Edit: It would seem that as long as I set the timing to 2T instead of Auto or 1T, it works fine. I haven't played with timings much since I wanna play something now that its stable. I think I'll be buying new low latency memory...

Im glad your getting progress, but to be frank.....i dont think its fair that you have to run your memory in 2T. You arent running all memory slots right? Cause if you are, thats the problem right there. Other wise its not fair. 2T takes a performance hit over 1T and i nkow someone is gonna read this and say that memory bandwith doesnt do anything.....well, if that were the case than everyone would be buying generic memory and running at 400 2T, so that line is crap. Ok, i looked at your memory config......im gonna have to say that the A8N-SLI is extremly picky with memory. I had no problems with my TCCD, but others have had problems with lesser memory modules. Tell me what happens in the end huh?

you may want to run a memtest86+ on your system to see if your memory is good, couldnt hurt btw its a free download just do a google search for ultimate boot cd, btw have same board and was having major issues with windows locking up and not booting correctly and turns out the issue was my hd had a few corrupted sectors.... anyway changed hd and system is running pretty smothly now

hope this helps
