Hello everyone. I'm in the process of building a new system for my brother. I decided to go with the KT-600 chipset, because it offers SATA at a lower price. Also went with an Athlon XP 2400, because it offers the most raw GHz for the buck, which he needs for video encoding.

Anyways, got the system partially built. and decided to see if it would make a pass of Memtest 86. I thought that since an XP2400 runs at 2GHz, and it had PC3200 RAM, that I could safely run at 10x200 rather than 15x133. No go. It won't even run 12x166. But it passes memtest no problems at 15x133, and I have the RAM speed set at DDR400. Really confused... even tried setting the ram speed to 266 and running 12x166 and 15x133. Only the stock speeds work.

So my question: Is there something built into this board that stops it from running at any FSB other than default? I'm disappointed... was hoping to build a strong system... 133FSB is pretty weak these days, only 33MHz higher than what he has now. :(

One step up with a Barton Core (2500+) is the strong overclocker.

Have you tried 9x200 ? That would give you stock speeds with a 400MHz bus.

I figured that since XP2400 runs at a faster core speed than XP2500, and the cache does not come into play in media encoding, that the raw MHz of the XP2400 made it a better choice. I believe the stock speed of an XP2400 is 2GHz, so 10x200 is not an overclock as such; the CPU is at stock speed, and neither the FSB or memory are being pushed beyond their rated speed. So I'm puzzled by this...

Well even better, I can't install windows with the CPU at stock speed... seems it doesn't want to boot when I try to install to the SATA drive. Just get some "Press a key to reboot" message. *sigh*... things never go easy.

Does it post at those 10x 200? are you sure that the multi is unlocked? are you running you fsb at 1:1?

Yes, I tried to run it at 10x200. I tried it at 1:1, and even tried it with the memory clocked lower than 200, but no luck. I am not sure if this processor is locked or not, but last I heard, all Tbreds are unlocked.

When did you buy it? Tbirds are now locked when you buy them. So if you bought it at all recently (think in last 6months or more) it is probably locked. If you can't even get it to post with a different multiplier even at stock fsb and lower mulitplier then it is locked.

Thanks for the replies. I guess this thing is locked. Will have to leave it at stock then. :(

I'm pretty sure L2 cache helps in video encoding, but I might be wrong

Just because it is locked does not mean you have to leave it a stock, give it a try at overclocking if you are interested, raising the fsb will give better memory bandwidth as well as raising the cpu speed.

True, but I am thinking to play it safe. I live about 75 miles away from my brother, and so if something goes wrong it's a pain to go over there to fix it, and he could be without a computer for a while...

Was going to sell him my old XP1700, and suggest he buy a nice cooler for it... but I thought this would be a better deal, get an XP2400 + stock HSF for around the same price. Seems I was wrong. :(

Yeah, I think the CPU is locked, the board is fine. Oh well, at least he gets a big performance boost, upgrading from a Duron 1200.

Thanks for the replies everyone.
