Hey, I have madea similar post like this in the past and I'm not happy to have to make one again.

I have this system with a problem, first here are the specs.

ASUS A7N8X-VM
AMD 2500XP
Crucial PC2100 512MB DDR
Onboard Sound, Network, Video
Aspire Case w/ stock 350Watt Power supply <-- the culprit?

Anyways here is the issue. THe system when from running fine to locking up. It was restarted and it ran fine. Then, it was shutdown again. After that the problems started. the power button is no longer responsive. The only way to get it to power up in any fashion is to hit the kill switch on the powersupply and then turn it back on and every once in a while the system will power up and the fans will spin for about 2 seconds, and most of the time not even that will happen.

Last time it was having almost exactly the same problem except I could get it to power on for the brief period of about 2 seconds more often.

Things i've tried -> Another powersupply, different memory, clearing the cmos, powering on with no CPU among other things.

I'm pretty sure the motherboard is a goner yet again, I have a feeling it might be do to a cheap powersupply but wanted to see what you guys thought.

If the power supply is indeed that cheap, then it's unlikely that it's even 350W. Try it with a better PSU and see how it does.

Also, you may want to get PC2700 DDR to get the most out of the 2500+'s 333MHz bus. It's not the cause of your problem ... just a little performance kick.
 
I actually intented to have PC3200 ram I believe it was, but the damn motherboard wouldn't work with it! This board turned out to be pretty crappy and nothing like the A7N8X-Deluxe like I expected.

I had to switch the ram with some 2100 I had in an older system.
 
I have the same board and it works fine for me. Do you know what revision you have? I have 2.0 and I heard and read every where that it makes the difference. I also found out that its not the greatest board to OC, but I guess its the luck of draw. Have you updated your bios to the latest version? (just standard things I would do - process of elimination). It sounds like you PS could be your culprit. Enermax 300/350W are really good PSs. There are others too.

Oh I forgot to ask if you installed the latest drivers for your mobo? Sounds stupid, but I know that was one of my problems at one point in time.
 
i had a similar problem and went through many different things until i bought some really good ram and it fixed everything
 
zupadupa - The thing is I cant even get the thing to post let alone keep the power on. So thinking about updating the drivers or bios right now are not really a big concern.

I'm not realysure what revision I have of the board, never thought to check but I can find that out if it makes a big difference.

Boosted_Framerate - I have tried 3 different kinds of ram besides whats already in there, Samsung 2700, some generic stuff out of a Gateway along with my Corsair CMX512-3200C which I believe is on the recommended ram list, although there is 1 number difference in the part number but you'd figure it wouldn't be that picky right?
 
I once had the exact same problem and it turned out to be the power supply. As it turned out; the capacitors of the power supply were failing for some reason (I guess they reached the end of their useable life); I came to this conclusion from the gentle squealing noise eminating from the psp. Upon further inspection (opening the psp that is) there was a big ol' burn mark around the caps on the pcb.

My money's on your power supply. :D
 
i think i finally revovered from a problem with cutting out (maybe i shouldnt ahve said that)

everytime i ran sort of demanding programs, it cut out the same way

after doing too many things ( swappings psu's, disconnecting connecting EVERYTHING, removing and reapplying arctic silver (thought the cpu was hot) and other things) i finally think i got it

the solution for me was one of two things:

1. my trend micro firewall trial was done, so it kept popping up. i read in another thread that another antivirus/firewall app caused our problem i uninstalled it (should of earlier)

2. used asus update, 1st dload the proper bios from the asus site and extract it. then use asus update to apply it

it works for me now, stressing my comp with 30 bot UT2k4 onslaught and poser 4 with as many models as i can fit

Possible areas of concern:
*Mobo grounding issue
*Ram compatability or ram timings
*Psu quality

Less costly things you can try

-Take your system apart, remember to keep yourself grounded.
-Temporarily remove cmos battery (maybe even replace it) and reset cmos a few times for the heck of it (helps with Nforce)
-Cover your case's mobo standoffs with electrical tape, also use the red plastic washers along with your mobo fastening screws. Its very possible you might have a grounding issue.
-Reinstall system and use only one stick of ram in slot 1. Experiment with mem timings. Norce2 igp is notoriously fussy but usually has a sweetspot.
-Try to use only 1 HD on ide 0 and try to avoid installing any extra pci cards
-Power up to test, if all's ok then make any necessary bios changes and reboot again.
-If all is well then you can install the os + updated mobo drivers + winxp updates.

You can experiment with a second stick of ram once all steps above have been fulfilled
 
Thanks guys I appreciate the suggestions, although a lot of them I cant try because I cant even post at all now :).

I am definetely going to try a good powersupply before I send away for an RMA though and will try to make sure the motherboard is grounded.
 
Ok i just tried the powersupply from my other system (was running an AMd 2500XP before but now is running a P4 1.6). ANyway, I just unplugged the main power cord that goes to the mobo and slid the mest up system right next to it. Same thing, funny thing is when I turn the powersupply on all the fans and stuff spin up in my working case and shut off right again but I guess that should happen. Hitting the power button still yields no results.
 
It did the first time =/. I am just trying to figure out what to do to keep it from happening again. Get a new powersupply or maybe new memory? Possibly both?

And can't be just coincidence that 2 motherboards die the exact same way.
 
My old abit it7, 1/2 the time when I'd hit hte power button, fans would spin for 1/2 second and then nothing, hitting nnpower would do nothing I'd have to reach around unplug the poewr supply (actually i used the switch on the back of the ps, does the same thing) I'd wait a few seconds and I could hear a noise of the power draining... made a little squeek noise.. then I'd turn it back on wait a second and then hit the power button again... rince and repeat.

I still have the system, its my gfs now, runs 24/7 now, I unhooked the power button and got windows to remove the shutdown button so no one gets any ideas ;). (gotta ctrl alt deltet and pick shutdown now)

Anyways I'd say going though that process it boots 1 in 4 times. If I just flip the switch on the back of hte mobo off and on real fast and then hit power nothing happens at all... or if i do put a pause in there for power to drain then flip it on and immediatly turn it on.. no go. After alot of playing i got that system down and it works for me :p hehe.

Basically turn ps off let power drain everywhere (ps should have something to drain cap's power for safety reasons, most likely the noise that i hear) turn ps on, let the caps and everything fill .. make sure ps is 100% ready to give out alto of power heh.. and then hit power.

Once it did turn on however, system is fine, prime95/gaming/whatever, computers been up for a month now probably (put a dvdr drive in it awhile ago, last time it shutdown).

ANYWAYS

That is with a nice power suppsly (antec pp412x) I always assumed it was the power supply until I tried my new seasonic powersupply on it a few weeks ago and same problem.

Not sure how/if they're related but it had the same thing where you'd have unplug hte ps and plug it back in before the pokwer button would work.
 
Sounds like its having the same problem but even if this system sits for a week if you go to turn it on it will do the same thing. If I could solve the problem the same way as you though it still wouldn't be good enough because its not my system. If it was me I'd probably just deal with it but since it someone elses they shouldn't have to.

Guess I'll be RMA'ing this board yet again :(.
