A710 or S2 IS?

OK,

First off, I'm nearly clueless about digital photography. My current camera is a DSC-P41 I got in 04, and I'm looking to upgrade. I need to be able to take somewhat decent looking video, and my budget is right around $300; so I can't get an SLR.

Looking around, I seem to be narrowing in on the Canon Powershot series, specifically on the S2 IS and the A710. The A710 has more pixels, but looking at photos taken with both, the S2 seems to kick it's butt. I may be new at this now, but I am looking to seriously upgrade my skill because I'm very interested in this.

So, which of these would you pick, or would you go an entirely different direction? I've already got a bunch of rechargeable AA's, and some high speed SD cards, so outside of a case I don't really need any accessories. Are one of these the right option for my money?

Personally I'd wait to see what Canon announces for PMA in the next 3-4 weeks if you have a working camera now. Olympus introduced a monster of a cam that does like 28-500, shoots raw and has IS, I'm hoping Canon will respond in force and bring Raw back to their digicam line.

Well I need to buy in the next 2 weeks or so, but thanks for dangling that carrot in front of my nose. :p

Would you recommend the Olympus you mentioned?

Well I would say the S2 over the A7. But really I would suggest the S3IS over those. This despite the fact Im a Nikon user, I think the S3 is a great P&S. But so is the S2.

Too early to say on the Olympus. Wait for reviews, which could be a while. Like I said I buy almost exclusively Canon so I'm hoping they will put out something similar or better soon. If you have to buy now, either the S3, S2 or A710 are great cams, you will just have to decide of the 'toys' or form factor is the most important to you. Also keep an eye out in the Deal forum and at www.ilikecheapstuff.com as I expect to see more camera deals as we get closer to show announcement time next month.

Well checking it out, I think I'm willing to pay the extra for the S3. I went over and handled one at Bestbuy earlier today, and I really liked it. Size isn't a huge concern. I'm getting my tax refund this week, so I'm probably going to pick it up from Amazon. I've got about $50 of credit there, so I should end up paying around $330, unless something else looks better by then. :p

Thanks for the advice so far, and I'll be checking out that olympus link later on when I get home.

I have had an S3IS for the past 4 months after doing a lot of research and I adore it. You won't be disappointed!
