My A70 crapped out on me after about 1.5 years of service. Its been around the world with me and even to some very remote places riding up in a pouch on my backpack. I am looking for a replacement but would like to get something with better than 3.2mp but also better zoom but at the same time not so bulky. I have looked at Canon's Pro 1, and the Digital Rebel. I have only considered Canon's cameras because I have long relied on the quality of their film cameras and found that that quality exteneded into their digital cameras as well. I am willing to consider other brands, but I am not sure what is good and what is not and was hoping that you guys could help.

What I am looking for is
4mp+
5x optical zoom or better
good battery life.

Any ideas?

although it doesn't meet your requirement of 4mp, the Canon S1-IS is pretty close to what you are looking for. Its got 10x optical zoom and all of the stuff you have for A70 will work with it still(CF, rechargeable AAs, etc). Its about the same size as an A70 to.

I was looking at that, but after having the 3.2mp A70, I am left wanting something with a higher resolution. I wish Canon had something in-between the Pro1 and S1-IS, say around 5-6 mp. IF they did I would buy it up in a heartbeat.

go with the rebel

The rebel is great. But it's a bit more $. And it's a lot blulkier heavier than the A70. I'd reccomend the Pro1. Just because it's slightly smaller. Or even the A90 which is smaller still. Depends what you want to carry around backpacking. You can't lose with any of them in terms of image quality.

rebel will have more after trip funanza if you get really into photography
but if size is the key the A90 will fit in small places well
