a64 w/ antec 300w

I currently have a 300watt antec psu in my system. Im runnin an xp1800. i'm considering upgrading to an athlon 64 processor. I'll be running three hd's, and a cd rom in addition. Do yall think a power upgrade is necessary?

I am personally uneasy about just having 300 watts. I would recommend you to go for at least 400 if you're going to make a next generation jump. Those 3 hard drives sure need power, especially the new A64's. If you're going to go light on a video card, you can make do with 350. If a heavy gaming card, then use at least 400.

Is it an Antec True power or a Smartpower or something else? Because if it's a Smartpower no way.

oh, forgot to mention, im also running a radeon 9700. sigh, guess its time to upgrade...

You can give it a try ... then buy one if it won't work out ... I was able to run one with an Allied 300W, but it reboots when running a graphic intensive game ... everything else it was fine ...

its the amps for which rails

the PSUs of yesteryear where strong on the 3.3&5V combined rail
because thats what was powering the CPU and mobo
that changed to the 12V rail (actually rails there are 2 12V rails on any ATX12V v1.3 or better PSU and 3 to 4 12V rails on any EPS12V supply)

if your short on 12V your pretty much screwed regardless of what it says the watts are or who made it

I think 300 watts barley makes it. You voltage railing probably going over the boarder. How many fans you have in you rig? How many drives,etc? Try 400ish is more suitable.
