My computer runs Prime95 just fine, but sometimes all of the sudden the machine just freezes....

some questions:

1) Any reason why this might happen instead of Prime95 failing first?

2) What are reasonable temps AND voltages for the A64(venice) ?

3) Is rubbing alcohol and cotton swabs a reasonable method for removing thermal paste from cpu/heatsink?

4) What exactly does the "burn in" period of the processor involve

and

5) how long does it take until arctic silver 5 reaches max cooling efficiency?

What are you doing when it freezes? Could be video card, power supply, HDD errors, conflicts, etc...

Idle: 30*C to 40*C
Load: 45*C to 55*C
Voltage: I would not go over 1.55V

Yes, that's what I use.

I've never believe it to work for the processor but the thermal paste does take some time to to reach maximum effectiveness.

I would say a burn-in of 12+ hours is plenty.

I'm usually not at my computer and Prime95 is running with cpuz and nTune are running also, then I'll come back and it will have frozen. Also, sometimes I'll be just surfing the internet and the mouse will just stop responding and when I press the keyboard it will start working jsut fine again.

Any ideas?

What reporting mechanism would you trust most for voltage? Because I have it set to 1.6 in BIOS, but CPU-Z reports it at 1.56V...
 
What hsf are you using? What are your load temps? If using stock hsf, 1.56-1.6v is a bit on the high side. 1.6vcore is the max I suggest on good air cooling....preferrably less.
 
I'm using the ICE cooler that comes with the SN25P stock. I don't know how it compares to other coolers, obviously it's no XP-90C.
