I have a slight problem that I'm hoping you guys can help me with.

I recently bought an MSI K8N Neo Platinum Edition ATX nForce3 Athlon 64 Motherboard and a CPU to go with it.

Unfortunately, my knowledge of A64 motherboards seems to be lacking. I bought an Athlon 64 3200+ to go with it. I just realized that the MSI K8N is for a Socket 754 CPU and I'm not sure what the 3200+ is.

Is there a significant difference between Socket 754 and Socket 939?
 
Socket 754 also has less room for upgrading, as the highest socket 754 proc is something like a A64 3200+.

939 has much more room for upgrading, as there are alot more higher end procs that use it, such as FX-55 etc.
 
AFAIK soc754 doesn't support dual channel memory, which you may or may not care about.
 
3700+ is the highest s754.

like fredgeot said, compare the pins on the chip you have with the pic. if you have an open square space in the center of the pins its s754 and you're good to go. if not, trade out the mobo for a neo2platinum.
 
I haven't got the CPU in hand yet.

I do know that it is a Winchester, though, and from what I've seen they only make socket 939 Winchesters... :(
 
Egg had DFI UTs for $138, may still but I'm too lazy to look. They're good shit though.
 
BTW, SLI mod still works, although use a damn circuit pen and not a pencil even if it can work. Heard that later revisions they may have enameled over the contacts, if you're careful you can chip it off and be back to it working. God I love when stuff like this turns up. I'm not even using the SLI bit, but it's so satisfying. ^_^
