If you have the money and are willing to put up with the 2405's limitations when it comes to gaming than go for it, you'll be happy as a pig in shit.. I couldn't imagine not having dual monitor setup anymore where I can do whatever I want on one screen and game on the other..
 
dual 2405 would be excessive for your purposes. Unless you are some graphic designer and coder, where you will use the space for lots of pictures and room for coding. But you are just a general PC user, its excessive. You can do dual monitors though, just not dual 2405. Just get a cheap $250 19" LCD for your second monitor and use that to have your Outlook/IM/and a few other things on...then do your main tasks on your 2405 and game.

The real benefit for a gamer in having a second "screen" would more likely be with those
screens that go in the 5 1/2" drive bays that show all types of system info (more specifically
memory/hdd activity), but for your general use...it would be better if you went with more ram
and storage.
 
Useful. You can multi-task. Do a magazine scan, no need to wait for it. Edit some document in WordPerfect, cut & paste some text in your Netscape, etc. 3 - 4 LCD is nothing these days.
 
very very useful. People dont often realise how much multitasking they do. With 2 moniters you can do all of this stuff at once and see what you doin without having to minimize all the time.
 
completely useful, once you get used to it.

We offered dual monitors to every person where I work, every one of the 10 programmers turned them down.
I couldn't believe it.

I was the only person in IT to set it up and it probably the best productivity tool I've ever found.
I can have all my server stats, email, and remote desktop client on one monitor, and use the other for the work that actually changes.
 
I've been using dual screens for a few years now and it makes doing general computer stuff much easier. I'll have documents or programs that I need to access frequently on the second display while working primarily on another program on the main display.
Makes it quicker since I don't have to keep flip flopping between programs and documents.

I'll be devil's advocate and say considering your needs you don't really need a second monitor. Alt+tab is there for a reason, I use it religiously. Additionally, I find having a second monitor there with games can slow them down, produce graphical errors and is just distracting in general.
 
Your needs don't seem to dictate a need for a second monitor (unless you want to do work while gaming, but I find that a little difficult. ;) )

However, if you do do stuff like graphic work or development, dual monitors is incredibly usefull. I run 1600x1200 and wish for more desktop space since I have two graphics programs at the game time and some programmer IDEs and browser windows.
 
I've used 2 and three screen setups, and personally I find 3 screens to be a nicer setup than two. I find not having my main screen directly in front of me is annoying, and the far end of a side screen is a bit too far away. If you've got the slot for an extra vid card, I'd go with one large screen for the center screen, then a pair of smaller cheaper ones for the sides. Perhaps something like a 2405 and a pair of 19" LCDs. Also, I'd look for PVA or MVA screens for the side screens. They've got the best viewing angles short of a CRT.

If you can swing the 30", it'll change your whole perspective on what a monitor should be. Way better than two smaller monitors.

Zandor, I thought about that too. And was stuck in the same planning stage as you for a long time. Especially if you use it in an office and there is a guy sitting in front of you, his face blocked by a large monitor.

There is a good solution: Use the swing arm, swing it in front or at your side when you use it, swing it out of the way when you don't.

when you want to buy a new monitor, and dont wanna sell the old one, it's good to have a use for the old monitor i think.
 
If you want extra utility, buy one of those 300-500$ dell package deals. Use the primary computer for the more resource intensive stuff. Then use the smaller second monitor to do everything else like surf, chat, music, etc. This way you don't have to alt-tab out of your games to use a second monitor. It'll take a little time seperating your files between the two computers according to use, but it'll be worth it in the end. It's a pain to be able to read IMs on my second screen, but not be able to reply without alt-tabbing.

A second 2405fpw just for multi-tasking is overkill for you I think. The second computer will be more useful AND cheaper. If you don't want the heat and the space usage of a second box, get a laptop since money doesn't seem to be an issue for you.

I'm dual monitoring because I didn't want to throw away my old monitor, I'd take a second computer instead if I could.

I'm not sure I fully agree, since it depends on the applications you're using. Adobe Premiere doesn't scale to multimonitors because many of the tools can't be dragged outside of the main frame window. A single large monitor has the same problem; some applications get sick when the font ratio is changed (MusicMatch Jukebox is one example) and lots of applications don't scale their UI well to all the real estate a big single display offers.
 
I use dual monitors for one of three things:

1) have main coding/writing/learning on left screen and all kinds of monitoring (syslog, irc, music player) on the right

2) have a fullscreen movie on the right and when I have an idea or need to google something spontaneously use the right screen so that I don't have to fiddle the movie away

3) (Windoze) have a fullscreen game on the right and have temperature monitoring on left

In all three the second monitor doesn't have to be high quality, but high resolution helps to put up lots of monitoring junk. In fact I sometimes have the secondary screen at higher res than the primary where I often have nothing more than one emacs and 3 xterms.
