The time for BTX has come and gone, and it failed. BTX was rejected by most of the industry. The only people using BTX right now are OEMs. There may be another push for it in the future, but I doubt it.

Just FYI, a 1.8Ghz Core2Duo will outperform your Pentium4 3.06Ghz CPU.

You should be upgrading because you need more performance, not to beat out the adoption of a new standard. If you need a new system, build one. If you don't, enjoy the one you have. You'll most likely need a new PSU though, if you're upgrading.
 
I believe Intel has ended development of the BTX standard. It has indeed failed. As Enginurd says, upgrades should be done when performance needs call for them. Updating based on standards is hardly a good idea, as new standards are coming out all the time, and no one ever knows for sure which standards will take hold and which wont.

Haha, instant booting would need solid state drives, and those are just now coming out. Wait til they're mainstream.

Coming in 2008 are new CPUs from both Intel and AMD, so you could wait for those if you want. The new NVIDIA GPUs should be comin out that time, too, along with some new chipsets. There's always something new coming out. If you can wait, then wait. If you can't, upgrade.
 
BTX is a lost cause. I don't think people really care to re-invest in their entire system setup to relocate their processor and flip their board headers around.

Dell is one of the big OEM's still trying to push it, but I don't think they are pushing it as much for future technology as much as they are trying to push it for their own benifit of being proprietary.
 
AMDs barcelona chips will be out soon and look to perform at roughly an equal speed per clock to intels current core 2 lineup.

Q108 will have mainstream 45nm chips from intel.

Next month will see refreshes of both ATI and nVidia's lineups, although if the most popular rumor mills are to be trusted they're only going to be low/midrange parts. Back in April nVidia said something about a 1tflop GPU (2x faster than an 8800GTX), but has said nothing since either way. All the rumor mills could be wrong, or nVidia could have had to slip the release date due to technical problems. Anyone who knows is nda and can't say anything as a result.

At some point in the future DDR3 will go mainstream, but until it's clock speed increases it won't offer any performance benefit over DDR2 and is still horrifically expensive. It uses significantly less power than DDR2, but that's only a significant factor in the laptop/embedded world. As cheap as good DDR2 is I wouldn't delay for it.
