My X850XT gave up on me today. I cannot RMA due to modifications, so it's $500+ shot to hell. Now, would another X850XT outperform SLI'd 6800GT's? Or, even better for me, that new Gigabyte dual 6800GT card? I'd prefer to stick with one card, but I don't know if I can foot the bill for a 7800 series. I'd also prefer a factory "quiet" solution if that is possible, so I don't run into the problem I'm facing now (needing an aftermarket cooler, etc). Thanks

7800GT

That is true......I'll probably end up with a 7800 GT, but how does the dual-cored 6800 perform? Will it outperform the 850 I had?

A dual 6800GT is a bad choice. If you can afford dual 6800GTs in SLi why not a 7800GT?
the 7800GT wil outperform the Dual 6800GT card and SLi 6800GTs. All the Cards you talked about (minus one 6800GT) would outperform the X850XT.

Yes, also confused. Two 6800GTs costs more than one 7800gt, and performance is similar.

Why are you considering more expensive and slower solutions than the 7800GT?

I didn't realize the 7800 had come down in price so much. I expected $700+, but it's actually cheaper than what I paid for my 850XT. Problem is, I don't have the cash to drop right now...but Visa loves me
:D

My personal choice would be an X800XL(make sure to get the HIS IceQ II which has the giant leaf blower). I would buy it, OC it and then when ATi releases their R520, see how it competes with the 7800 and then make a decision, but that's just me. I am content with my ATi card and prefer it over the 6800U thats in the other machine.

That kind of looks like a MSI "Lite" package that I just bought but maybe its the BFG version, although I have no idea what the 3d Fuzion is all about.

That option is kinda weird to me. Is he going to enjoy a 7800series less because ati released a new card? His card will still run games at incredible resolutions and nice framerates with plenty of eyecandy on regardless of how the r520 runs. If he wants to get a replacement card now, then he should get something that will do what he wants it to. The r520 could be a flop, then he spent all this time waiting for the next big thing and it never materialized.

An X800XL would run games at full settings just fine right now, it's not like hes going to buy a 9200SE and pass the time with it. An X800XL is capable of doing almost what a 7800 does. When the R520 comes out you can compare and find the best deal. If the 7800 truelly does outperform the R520 then the 7800 would be the best deal hands out and vise versa.

"Alsmost" being the keyword.
Here is a link to the the ABIT Fatal1ty X800XL 512MB
(notice that is is even the 512MB version!)

Doom3:

The BFGTech GeForce 7800 GT OC surpasses both the ABIT Fatal1ty X800 XL 512MB video card and the GeForce 6800 GT with a higher playable quality setting.

Halflife 2:

The BFGTech GeForce 7800 GT OC, however, surpassed the ABIT Fatal1ty X800 XL by allowing 4X Transparency Super Sampling for superior image quality in this game.

Need For Speed Undergund 2:

Comparing the gameplay experience to the GeForce 6800 GT, we find that the ABIT Fatal1ty X800 XL offers up a better experience since it allows a higher playable resolution. The BFGTech GeForce 7800 GT OC surpasses both video cards for image quality and performance.

Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory:
However, not all is lost for NVIDIA as the BFGTech GeForce 7800 GT OC still offers the absolute best image quality and performance in this game.

EverQuest II:

The BFGTech GeForce 7800 GT OC performed the best allowing 2X TR MSAA at 1600x1200.

And I could go on.

Terra - And that was even with 512 MB of RAM, compared to the normal X800XL

I wouldnt go with an X800XL (Depends on the Res you play at). I think you should go with an 7800GT or if you dont have enough money (its realatively cheap now) then grab like a 6800GT or something.
By the way Terra Calm down.

With the various sales and links, the 7800gt can be had for less than $400. Even if that was double the price of the x800xl it would still be more than worth it. Why sell your budget short? If he can afford a nice card now that WILL last him a while, why not buy it? If I was in the market for a new video card, I'd look at the 7800 series without question.

Where do I appear to be angry?
Just because I like to back my claims with links, dosn't mean that I am angry.
Links = facts = a certain breed can put personal views forward as being facts ;)

Terra...

Thanks guys. I'll get a 7800 GT or GTX in about 2 weeks. I'm going on vacation for 10 days (I earned it), and my new car was SUPPOSED to be delivered yesterday (heads are gonna roll), so I won't spend any more cash for a few days, anyway. I'm liking the looks of the eVGA card just for the simple fact it gives you a decent MoBo for about $50, and with the way I've been toasting electronics recently, it may be a good thing to have around :p

Good choice
;)

Well, I'm running a bit further behind schedule that I'd wanted, but my 7800 GT will be here Tuesday. I got the eVGA with the free MoBo, and if it doesn't make me happy, I'll order another set and SLI the cards. Then I'll make a good deal on the extra MoBo and buy a newer PSU that has SLI plugs (I have the "old" OCZ with 1 PCIe plug). At least I can get back to using my FP2405- the Radeon in my sig wouldn't even surf well at 1920x1200 :(

Oh, yeah, I won't be AS Epoxying any RAMsinks on the new card(s) either :p

A powerstream 600w would work with sli 7800gts, just get another pci express cable

Assuming you have the old model, does it still have 35A combined on the 12v rail (aka 20A on each of the 2)

Or is the old version all on one rail?

I'll be building a second rig that DEFINITELY won't be SLI, so I'll use the OCZ in that. I'm really eyeing that new Silverstone
