A weird soundcard issue.

First, let me preface what I have, and how I use it...

I have a Terratec DMX 6Fire with the box that fits in a bay. It has a pair of line in RCAs, along with other inputs. You may find it strange, but I mostly listen to vinyl LPs, so I feed a turntable signal through an external preamp into the Terratec's line in on the front panel. I use the card for only to control two speakers that are driven by an external amp.

The weird issue...

Today, I noticed that I was getting very little sound through one channel, so I figured it was a connection. I checked all of them, and after they checked good, I restarted the computer. The machine's hardware kept current to it because I didn't shutdown. I simply restarted Windows. Then, all the sound went back to normal.

Finally, the question...

Anyone here ever heard of a soundcard driver loading only a single channel?
 
Check the cable
My DMX 6Fire does the same thing on occasion and reseating the cable usually fixes it for a while
 
You don't understand. I did check the cables. I even swapped them. When I restarted, it loaded the missing channel. Very strange.

I meant the cable that runs from the card to the breakout box.
I would normally turn the machine off to check that cable so when you said you did not turn the machine off I assumed you meant only the audio cables plugged into the breakout box and preamp.
 
Yeah, I did check that. It was fine, too. I promise that wasn't a cable issue. It had to be a driver issue because the hardware was never turned off, but the driver was reloaded when I restarted Windows XP.

Now that we are on the same page.
Does it do this all of the time or was it a one time thing?
If it does it all of the time I would take the cover off the breakout box and check the solder joints on those RCA jacks
It might be easier to try the Phono input and see if it still does that.
(obviously you won't need to activate the RIAA filter and you will need to turn the gain down)
 
It was a one time thing, but if I see it a few more times, the Terratec goes. I've been thinking of getting a real pro card anyway. I'm not that wild about spending $1000 right now, however.
