An idea just struck me when I was writing up a scheme for my CPUs scaling to estimate just about how high it would possibly go with better equipm.(gotta decide if it's worth shelling out the bucks for a better psu or not), anyway

at it's original clock of 1.83GHz with stock volt of 1.675 it would output 68W of core power. This probably most here know or have read.

However, it could go down to as far as 1.325V rock stable, which was higher than BIOS would allow so I therefore had to use a third-party tool to adjust voltage this low.

Now think about this, a stock unclocked Barton 2500+(not even a good OC'er, trust me) will function perfectly at .35V less, this means it will consume 33% less power to run with a core power rated at only 44W.

Now imagine if like with laptops with mobiles, a desktop PC would run a little built-in "stresstest" every month or so(this as hardware may worsen, require more after time etc) and by so doing establish a minimum and optimal voltage for it's cpu unit(no overclocking or underclocking involved), imagine how much such a simple device, program/hardware/bios doesn't really matter, would save the less [H]ard users worldwide who don't care about OCing and pushing their cpu to the limits.
Fact is these babies should be set at just as low default volts as their mobile kindred, could save many businesses and home users money on their electric bills and also would just be a smart thing, sure AMD might have the every odd shitty example coming from factory that requires exactly 1.675V to run but with some smart scaling one could leave it at that. No point in compensating when only a few procenta of the units coming out need it. Now why don't they do this..of course it would impair on the mobile athlon xp market which wouldn't be a very good thing.

NOTE: this is just a rambling of mine, the numbers and digits here may not be exact nor anywhere near actual values as i'm no professional, just an enthusiast, but you get my point anyway.
Also this is a cpu from last year, before the handpicking bartons really begun. Feel free to poke a hole in my argument if you find one. Oh and sorry for the long read ;)
