A Quick Question About Upgrade From AMD to Intel

Hi all,

Thanks for taking a look at my question.

I am planning to upgrade from my current AMD 5000+ to Intel C2Q 6600.

However, I had heard from some shop assistant that I would need to reformat both of my HDD as AMD and Intel are different technologies.

2 HDD:
First HDD (160gb): Mainly for Windows/Drivers/Programs/etc
Second HDD (250gb): Just for back up purposes

My question is whether or not I have to reformat BOTH my HDD to switch technologies(AMD to Intel).

Or can I just reformat the First HDD(Since this HDD contains the AMD drivers) and keep my Second HDD unformatted?

Pretty sure your backup drive doesn't need formatting.
 
You'll need to reinstall Windows, but thats it. Everything else can stay.
 
You don't even need to format the first HDD. Actually it would be enough only to install clean Windows. Clean Windows meaning no upgrade or repair option.
But in general when replacing some of the hardware it is best to format the disk (or partition) where Windows is installed.
 
along the lines of silicon legend is there something to certain intel boards not liking ddr2 over 1.8 volts?

I have never heard this for any Intel chipset, don't know about NVIDA's attempts though...in my book you are going less than optimal by a none Intel chipset for an Intel CPU.

Yes, I've heard of accounts with nVidia chipsets that got damaged when using 2.0v or higher. I believe this also occured with certain Athlon Am2 chips.

I know that my P965 has no problem at all, it's been running 4 DIMMs at 2.05v for about 1.5 years now. My brother uses a 975X chipset that's been running 4 DIMMs at 2.35v for well over 2 years.
So my experience with Intel chipsets and DDR2 is that they are extremely robust with 4 DIMMs and over-volting.

I run my ddr2 at 2.1v on my nvidia board. No memory problems. On most mobos it will default to 1.8v but it is obviously easy to change.
