A quick Physx question.

Hello. I have a quick question.

If I run dual 5970 OC'd and an i7 920 OC'd to at least 3.5GHz on x3 27" monitors in EyeFinity mode PLUS wanted Physx, would the "GTX 260 (55nm)" be enough as a dedicated PPU to power the most demanding Physx enabled game and for future games (which I predict will be just as demanding if not more so with more advanced gaming engines coming out and Physx as a whole maturing over time)? Would it be advisable to go any higher?

Bonus Question: Just for shits and giggles, would a GTX 295 be possible as a PPU or would the GTX 285 be the current highest possible?
 
A GTX 260 would be over kill in most cases for the 6 or 7 games that use gpu accelerated PhysX. For future games I can't really say. I have no clue what future games, if any more, will use gpu accelerated PhysX, or how taxing it will be to a 260 in future games. A 285 would of course be the best option, but I don't think it would translate into much, if any higher FPS in current gpu ccelerated PhysX titles.

As a pure PhysX card, I do not believe the 295 would be a god choice. PhysX is not SLI enabled last I heard, so only one of your gpu's on the card would end up being used.. It will work in a sli setup of course, but it will only use one gpu for PhysX. That may have changed by now, so I may be incorrect on that at this point, so somebody correct me if I am wrong.
 
Buying into any physics processing technology is still an early bet. Nvidia is trying to muscle themarket into physx but getting lots of flack at the same time. There are other competing standards, none of which has majority market share. It is also not 100% clear if the physics cards are actually doing something that is really needed, or if its just all marketing. If you check out most of the technology demos for both Nvidia and ATI you will see that the cards are able to create much more complex FX than are in use in games.

The choice really goes out to the developers on what to support or not support. DO you really want to plop down $500 on a video card to run a few physx effects for a handful of titles when all the developer did was turn them on or off based on what video card you had?

We had some threads on this years ago and the technology was in about the same state it just wasnt integrated within the video card. So here we are 2010 and now physx is on the video card just like we predicted in 2007/2008. Yet we still cant find much value in Physx. The only real value is manufactured by Nvidia and most people can see through it pretty quickly. UNtil it comes down to major efefcts that are missing or a world that becomes dramatically more detailed with physics on the GPU it is just not worth the price of admission (for me).
 
^^^ Agreed. I looked at the list of physx enabled games and Batman AA is the only one I'd really care about. If Bioshock 2 or Fallout 3 used it I'd think about it.
 
Yah, well, I think the fate of Physx, whether successful or fail, is coming close. Close enough that if, if it fails and you got a cheap dedicated card, you wouldn't be able to sell the card for much, but then again you wouldn't have lost as much money either. And if it failed and you went with a higher end card, then you would have a better chance of making a good portion of your card back ESPECIALLY if nVidia's upcoming card line fails to impress. That'll hold back current GeForce cards from becoming obsolete a year or so maybe.

I think I'll go the CRAAAZY route and get a higher end card. My future rig demands it. :rolleyes:
 
If PhyX dies then at least you will have a nice video card for an HTCP rig that that would have some ok gaming performance at 1080p.

Or you could SLI it with another one for a secondary gaming rig.

Never underestimate the value of a secondary gaming rig. You never know when
your main rig will fail. Also you have to have somewhere to put all of the parts while
you upgrade right?
