in comparison, how much is a 1mb regular file on a computer worth in mp3 format?

By regular file, what do you mean? Like a WAV file? Are you talking about compression ratio or something?

Are you asking how much information is contained in a 1MB MP3 file?? If so, then generally (depending on the bitrate) an MP3 is about a meg a minute vs a WAV file which is about 10MB a minute.

MP3's have about a 12:1 compression. A 12MB wav file compresses into a 1MB MP3 and vice versa.

I don't know where you came up with that figure, because the bitrate varies wildly with MP3s...

Of course, but most (not all, including me) tend to encode at 128kbps which give the figures above. I tend to encode at 192kbps.

Quick, somebody code a program that analyzes an MP3 (VBR or static) and gives the compression raito ;)
