I'm currently bidding on a case of sorts for a possible mod. The case is a 16-bay JBOD server case. It is twice as wide as a normal case, with 8 drive bays per side. Dimensionally, the case would work for housing a PC. At 33 pounds, the thing must be made of 1mm steel...could prove interesting.

To pull this off, I will need to source an ATX motherboard tray and adapt it to fit the JBOD case...not a problem, since I have access to a full machine shop and can run any of the equipment there.

My problem stems from the aesthetics of the thing. I can do functionality, but I'm not so hot at doing something that has a "look".

Look at the case here:

JBOD server case

I would like an "industrial" look, but am unsure how to achieve something that looks good, but doesn't go over the top and look "tacky".

Suggestions?

shouldnt this be in the case modding section? As far as suggestions, just stare at the case and it will come together. For me if i stare at a case long enough it literealy transforms into how i want it to look. That case has lot of potential (as do almost all cases) But like I said it is a mater of what you want it to look like, not us. The best part about modding is that you get to create the design that is in your head. Mod for yourself not the masses.

JEEVES

Yeah that case would be an awesome platform to mod. You could do a lot to it, easily.

You got a lot to work with on that case, I'm sure you can come up with something to do... full of possibilities.

I like pizza though.

That looks like a CDrom array case. Buy a raid card or 2 and fill it with old DVD roms, and attach it to a HTPC. Instant multidisk DVD player, or Jutebox...or movies on one side and DVDs on the other.

The possiblities are endless...

Yeah...I probably put this in the wrong forum...n00b here!

The case is an old CD array case. Seemed like a good mod base, since it is dimensionally as deep and as tall as a good sized server case. Thought putting a mobo tray in it wouldn't prove too difficult. I'll have to ponder on it for awhile. If I win the auction, I'll put up some drawings of what I'm thinking of doing with it.

That case is spoogetastic. I could mod hte living hell out of that and still have more to go. Heck, you could make your own isolated radiator inlet/outlet, and still have room for your res and pump in the left side alone...then the right can hold your mobo, PSU, and drives...leaving you with a fully self contained, very high cooling factor unit.

...on overclocker's dream :)

to me i dont like the case. but to mod it that would be FUN FUN FUN!...

I didn't win the auction. As usually happens, someone outbid me at the last minute, dashing my hopes and dreams :tear:

I am still looking for a cool case to mod. Not that I plan using it per se, but I want to create something cool. I've been looking now at doing an AT to ATX conversion on an ancient server case and modding the piss outta that.

'till your daddy takes your T-bird awaaaay. :p

Yes...modding opportunities abound.

I've seen a lot of impossible bids lately....i deliberately made a bid at the last 4 seconds of an auction, a 70 dollar hike...and this guy beat me in the 4 seconds form mine hitting and the end.

Upon checking...this buy has had a history of winning EVERY bid he has made, he makes only one bid, at the very end of every auction...I'm calling Shenanigans on him...I also sent feedback to EBayover it, since I had the 30th auction in a row blasted by him in the last 10 seconds...considering it takes more than 10 seconds to bid..something's not kosher.

Whatever bot that guy was using...I want it.
