Ok... I am looking into getting two 7800GT's and COing them(In SLI mode), now I heard because of the sheer speed of them-in SLI mode some CPU's bottle neck. I was looking in to an AMD X2 4400+ at 2.2GHz, or should I go with an Intel P4D at 3.0GHz per core?

If gaming is your bag, go with AMD.

Oh, and if you mysteriously wake up in a burlap sack in Columbia and you hear your computer is gone...you know who did it. ;)
 
Well, actually, if you're looking dual core only then AMD pretty much wins in almost (I did say almost) every single benchmark against the Intel D.

And it's just plain a hell of a lot faster when working with single core apps.

And then there's the issue of the AMD probably paying for half of itself in power bills against the Intel over a 5 year period.

(Thank you Intel for not putting HT in your dual core CPUs and for making them total power hogs... it makes choosing AMD such a simple choice a chimp could do it in a blind taste test.)


And no, I'm not an AMD zealot. I like whatever product works best. Intel's dual core chips simply don't make sense. Well, they did on price up until AMD released the 3800+ X2. Now it's just sad.
 
Well, thanks for all the info... A nother reason I was conidering an Intel platform was for DDR2, Corsair has DDR2 Ram the runs at 1GHz stock... hows that for OCing...2GB of that and you'r off at least I think that would be the case... but I have not seen any benchmarks for it yet.
 
4400+ should be fine. I'm sure you can overclock it to a 4800+ without any problems.

I'm running that processor with GTX's in sli and all I have to say is wow.

Finally able to game in 1600x1200 with 4xAA SS / 16AF in every game. Far Cry is insaine at those settings.

there's a demo on intel's site for dualcore + HT cpus-- so i think they're on the horizon.
EDIT: Correction: the P4 DualCore EE has HT. sorry.



and they use speedstepping, which is nice, but not helpful, really.. (they're still 95/135W)

Going with intel because of DDR2 instead of AMD with DDR1 hoping for better performance is not really a wise choice imo.

Those AMD's have the nifty integrated memory controller which leads to lower memory access latency as well as higher memory bandwidth. This is all at stock speeds nonetheless....
