What are the best sites that are dedicated to the PSP? (at work, can't do much research from here, and may be purchasing tonight)

Is it better to buy local ( in-case of stuck pixels)
Or buy online for a better deal ?

To watch movies of the memory stick,do you need to go with modified firmware?

If one is going to put in modified firmware, which version of the PSP should one get?

Are there any updated guides on how to tell what version the psp is from the outside of the box?

Any info or direction would be Appreciated!

Are stuck pixels even an issue anymore? LCD manufacturing has come a long way since the PSP first came out.

No.

Probably doesn't matter any more - you're going to need to use Pandora's battery to get the modified firmware on there. The Slim has more RAM, which will ultimately benefit homebrew, so I'd get that. However, some versions of the PSP Slim are using a v2 motherboard that prevents Pandora's battery from working. Be cautious of that.

Thanks for all the info:cool:

I have been thinking about getting one for a long time, but never kept up on them

A friend was telling me that he is finding a lot of used games for pretty cheap .

The other thing I was thinking of using it for was for movies / tv shows on a trip, and since that seems easy to do..

It's time to start looking for deals :D

I bought mine off ebay. Came out great, if you know what your buying.

Make it 3...although with a large memory stick it can replace my MP3 player for long trips, too.

4th . There's a 16GB memory stick pro duo coming out this month. It's very expensive though ($300-$400) but it should finally bring down the price of the 8GB ones which are more than enough to fit several movies on.

can it do 480xBLAH mp4 movies now ? I remember it ha a cap at 320x240 or something non-native.

It has been able to do 480x272 (its native res) for awhile now. Movies/Videos with the right compression settings look fantastic on PSP.

IIRC, the limit is actually 720x480 at 30fps using a 768kbps bitrate when using MPEG-4(H.264 MP-L3 + AAC-LC), IIRC.

Custom firmwares actually allow a higher bitrate, but I've never seen the actual "reasonable maximum bitrate" number for that. UMDs run at 1500kbps, so I would figure that might be about right. I would be nice if it could 2000kbps - you could rip a DVD at full-resolution to MPEG-4(H.264+AAC-5.1) for the PS3, and then just do a quick audio downgrade to create a PSP-friendly version.

Realistically, for just watching on the PSP, you won't need more than 480x272 at 30fps using a 500kbps bitrate, though.

www.pspfanboy.com and pspupdates.qj.net

Buy local, you'll get the same price.

No

Doesn't matter, any version can be downgraded.

You will need some sort of converter to get your videos to work on the PSP (PSP media manager PRO is another one that would work, but it's no free).

and as acascianelli pointed out, PSP Fanboy is a decent website dedicated to all things PSP.

TA-085 v2 mobos can't be downgraded with Pandora's Battery - which means they're not going to get downgraded until a new software exploit comes out.

Yes they can, you cannot create Pandora battery because they removed the ability to write to the batteries EEPROM, but you can still use a already converted battery.
