It would seem that a discussion has cropped up around the possibility of the folks behind Firefox developing a complete Mozzilla based OS. As you can imagine, the idea has garnered a great deal of interest from the community, prompting these comments posted over at NordicHardware:

“I'm only proposing that we make a desktop environment, the same thing that KDE and Gnome, are. The only reason I mentioned a "Mozilla OS" is because we'd probably also want to release distributions for one of more specific kernels as a whole OS, including with it Firefox, Thunderbird, and any other applications built with the Mozilla platform available then. Currently there are plenty of kernels to put a Mozilla desktop environment on.”

That would be amazing. I don't know how they'd get and maintain the resources to develop an OS, but the desktop environment idea is very intriguing.

Of course, Firefox and the Mozilla OS will have to be loosely coupled enough to allow for 'alternative' browsers to work in that environment, lest they incur the Wrath of Europe! [could not find a smiley to convey my amusement/contempt/ennui at all parties involved]

It is ironic to me that the same group group of people that so adamantly challenged Microsoft's assertion back in the day that Internet Explorer constituted a valid and critical part of the operating system are now considering, possibly even already developing, an operating system around their browser.

I saw that this morning on slashdot. I think it's a good idea.

Wow...if they actually followed through with this and made a viable alternative to Windows, I'd snatch it up in a heartbeat. Given how Firefox and Thunderbird have been such terrific alternatives to Microsoft's craptastic equivalents, I definitely expect great things from them :)

Same. It will be interesting on how the OS will do against XP. Will it be like Linux? Where you can just get if for free?
