a modified z680 speaker config

its my opinion and many others that the z680s suck at mid range...

so.. i have this altec lansig 641 4.1 setup laying in the closet collecting dust. and i was remembering how much better these sounded. imho.

so i took two of them and put them in place of two z680 sats. im wondering if this is safe. im scared to run too much juice to them.
and it does sound better so far. i think..

Suck at mid-range? That's all they have.

Check the power handling on those 641 satellites (open them up) and compare it to the Z-680's. It should handle it for the most part.

While you're at it, change out the speaker wire for some decent copper stranded speaker wire from Home Depot or your local audio store.

er 680's lack a lot of mid range, they CAN play mids but it doesn't sound very clear. in order for clear mid range u DO need a seperate tweeter and mid-range driver

Our measurements of the frequency response of both the subwoofer and satellites are very good. Approximately +/- 5 dB from 156 Hz through to 20 kHz. The main range outside a +/- 3 dB range comes between 6.6 kHz and 9.4 kHz with a +4.75 dB peak at 7.9 kHz. This is competitive with the ProMedia 4.1 but clearly behind the MM2000 and Crossfire in overall smoothness.

Off axis (30 degrees) is somewhat smoother with a smaller peak and still good high-frequency extension through to 20 kHz at –3 dB. This is better than the ProMedia 4.1 off-axis results, clearly better than MM2000 off-axis.

We're gonna have to wave our hands from now on, and make purely subjective judgements about bass output. No longer will the mantra be: bass as phat as the gerbil flies.
