New gui for the control panel is great, however when you are behind in optimizations for such critical things as opengl... spend the money you wasted on that gui on more man hours for that. Don't play towards those who could care less about performance and would say "ohh this looks nice, ATi r win!!" (unless it comes to IQ in games for less of a performance hit.)... I hate to state the Obvious.

I don't think ATI is going to read this post. try e-mailing them..
:)

I would just focus more on getting the products to the market.

That's how you end up with shitty buggy products.

I am implying increasing production on the x800 XT PE which is just about non existant.

the x800xtpe is a good product, but finding it close to its MSRP...well thats like pulling a rabbit out of your ass :D

i wish i wouldvt had my 9600xt long enough to test the new control panel, but im much happier with my 6800gt :)

I just tried the new control panel, the thing burns system resources

I'd focus on staying ahead in all the games they're ahead in - far cry (they will be beaten iq wise soon), UT24k HL2, CSS etc etc. Doom 3 is nothing compared to HL2 and little compared to Far Cry.

This is truth, the xtpe is a great product, rocks ass... but when you can't buy the damned thing for less than a 1989 Honda Accord.. http://www.sell.com/2F9T4 .. :D... what's the point of even looking?

The x800xt's are becomming readily avaliable now, by mid-end of the month they will be easy to get imo.

the refresh is around the corner whats the use of getting the xt pe now?

Also in 6 months ya might see the r520

Because HL2 is out before the refresh? WHich isn't goign to happen till xmas in the us at the earliest and in the UK it won't happen till next year imo...

but why not leave the rabbit in after all that work getting in?

The refresh is next month, that means if HL 2 comes out in 1 month from when they state it goes gold, well hopefully some time soon they will, that makes it right around when the new cards will show up. For 3 months of playing HL 2 with 15 more fps is it really worth it? Which btw is probably going to be alot close with newer drivers for nV. Which I'm sure they are working on already, tweaking thier drivers on the VST.

Refresh being the 512mb cards? Next month? When they have only just got the x800xt out on mass? Are you sure?

Also 15 fps means alot when at 16x1200 some cards go down to lower than 30fps.

oh and to answer your q yes, the x800xt is totally worth it atm especially as it costs less than the Ultra. :)

I'm not sure about the 512 mb cards but the nV45 yes. Show me where it costs less and you can pick it up today.

The performance tests you see don't matter at all its not the game.

I'm a n00b you'll have to explain....so the nv cards are going to be faster in less than a month?

Btw HL2 may be out next week or in two weeks.

Well I don't know how they will be clocked in the refresh, a few sites have benchmarked the nV 45 don't know if its a smoke screen it could be because its just pci-e ultra and gt.

But will there be that speed increase when using the pci-e Refresh card in an agp slot?

I don't think there will be. HSI chip shouldn't increase or decrease performance.

35hz extra won't help nvidia in HL2 when the Ultra extreme is still noticeably behind the x800xt...

My machine = a HL2 gaming computer ;)

just wait there are new drivers from nV coming out soon, whql ones with the aa and af algo to go :). More benchmarking fun for alot of sites.

The only time ATi every wins is with AA and AF on, so its not like its a hardware issue. Performance of the dx api both cards perform almost identical.

Bah, HL2 isn't even impressive in the graphics/ohshitineedapowerfulsystem department. It's an old game. It looks the part. Far Cry and Doom3 do alot more for bringing systems to thier knees than HL2 ever will.

HL2 looks about 5-10 times better than D3 and far cry - not the textures (obviously) but the art, style etc - I want it at the highest settings. It stills look's excellent texture's wise. Especially as it's going to be better than far cry and doom3 put together - it's the gameplay that counts. My favorite game with the highest graphical settings possible at a playable framerate vs games which look a bit better (let's be honest D3 didnt look *that* good) but aren't as good gameplay wise; means I want the x800xt. Plus, to reiterate, I'll be playing CSS, Vamipres etc etc blah blah, I'll want the x800xt...

Plus I don't play doom3 and Far cry is faster on the x800xt (the HDR thing will be out way after I've finished it.)

Like I said my machine = a HL2 computer - I wanted the fastest card (assuming IQ is equal, which it apperas to be) for HL2, now I'm getting it.

OK but I think x800xt will still be ahead in HL2. But you can't say - they aren't even out yet.

What am I talking about " the IQ is equal in HL2 "? :S

HL2, as it stands atm, will look better on the x800xt simply because the 6800 seems to be dropping below playable framerate's even at 1600x1200, unless if you have a fx53 maybe, but even then it may not be playable at times. I want to play at 2048x anyway. I need the best chance possible to keep the game above the 35fps (imo) minimum playable limit, which means I need the x800xt especially as I don't have a FX53.

edit: Oh my gawd - I'm a "Gawd" I'm a "Gawd"!! m00!

Why are you trying to deter ATI's effort to improve their already efficient driver suite.

rancor the x800xt cost's less than the Ultra in the UK. They should be getting them in here by the masses soon. Dabs.com have shipped quite a few out already, they should be getting more in by next week.

"The performance tests you see don't matter at all its not the game." (that's in your opinion) - If the game is faster on the x800xt when it's out then they will have been (imo). Like far cry the fps will be worse in the HL2 game than the VST despite the cards having to work harder (thus supposedly getting higher fps) imo...I doubt the fps will be that much better anyway. Plus the x800xt IS ahead in CSS.

The X800XT can be had for about the same as an Ultra if you look around (£350 ish) but it is still not widely available and site like pcworldcomponentcenter.co.uk have bucket load of GT andUltra cards at good prices. And everyone in the UK knows that the mindless minions who know nothing about computers shop at PCWorld

Either way they are close enough to draw the conclusion of who care just buy what you prefer.

You were having issues tho dude, plenty of people are running CSS just fine on GTs at 16x12.

also u wanna play at 2048. Thats all well and good but when has a game come out that can be played at that sort of res with all the bells and whistles on hardware available at the same time?

Games are generally coded to be played at 8x6, 10x7 or 12x10. To get games to run at any higher levels you usually have to wait for new gen hardware. I'm not making this up its educated and reasoned logic.

Could [insert 3D game name here] be run at like 16x12 when it first came out on hardware widely available at the time??

I think mostly you will find the answer is no. The uber high resolutions (ie 1280x1024 and above are generally meant for desktop/2D applications so you get lots of screen real estate.

I got my BFG 6800 Ultra OC from Pcwcomponentcentre. The price was reasonable and delivery was good.

Right now ATI is trying to get every cent they can for their 3 yr old technology.
They won't read this or care what you say if they do.
They are making a profit and that is all that matters to them.

the only messages and/or comments they want to read are the ones that say WOW an X800/(9700pro pro special) for only $500 maybe I will get 2.

Ummm, rancor is right. The VST is NOT representative of Gameplay in HL2. It is NOT the HL2 engine, just a demo/benchmark tool used to give an "idea" of how a card runs/displays certain features that will be used in HL2. In fact depending who you talk to the VST is just a pettier version of the demo given at shader day.

it has the bridge chip it can be used in an AGP slot
Ummm correct me if I'm wrong but I read on those hardware websites that ATI is making "native" PCI Express cards, which means that they can't be bridged, therefore ATI has to make both AGP and PCI Express versions, whereas Nvidia made the bridged solution with their cards, correct? And I hear that the bridged solutions would add some latency, but would you really notice a difference because PCI Express has so much more bandwidth than AGP? Again I'm a noobie so I can always be wrong :)

Not saying that everyone who buys stuff there is a muppet, I got my GT there. But everyone knows that in the UK PCWorld has a huge influence on sales just by what they carry in stock and for the last month or two they have had no X800's of any kind and loads of 6800 cards so this can't be good for ATI.

Also when you go into the store you notice (where I live at least) very little X800 cards and a reasonable supply of 6800 stuff with the retard sales assistants pushing it on anyone they can.
