A media player - cache content in local temp path?

Does anyone know of a media player application that will load the contents of a media file (mainly avi/mpeg) into a temp file while the file is open? I ask because all my content is on a remote (file) server and when watching something, scanning around is slower than local copies when going over the gigabit LAN and when another PC is pulling content, it can get choppy for a second. I'd prefer to just have the system/software preload everything to the local system while its playing so it makes life simple and there's no need to do bandwidth control from the server side.

Any solutions? Right now I just copy the things over and watch it from there but with larger 720P and 1080P content today, this just takes too long (up to 7-8 minutes) at 80MB/sec before I start the video.
