Ok ladies and gents, I have been lurking around here forever and finally needed some community help for my first over clocking adventure.

I am rebuilding my current rig. I am currently running a P4 Prescott 560 @ 3.6GHZ all stock. The only parts of the system that will be making the crossover to the new Core 2 Duo are the PSU, my Radeon X1900XTX512 PCIe and SB X-Fi.

I ordered a e6300 for the CPU as it over clocks well in 99% of the reviews. I have a Scythe Ninja cooler already which will be slapped on top of the Conroe.
I also order 2GB of G.Skill DDR2 800 memory and a Gigabyte 965P-S3 MB.

Here is the thing; I am content with the choices I have made for the time being as this is my first foray into the Dual Core arena. I am not, however a big over clocker (never have been) and I am not sure what I will need to do when I get the rig up and running. I will set it all up with OS installed and everything at stock until then.

When I prepare to over clock... what should I be doing in the BIOS? I am not looking to set records, just run the system a bit faster than stock. I have read the over clocking guide and am still a bit foggy on how to do what needs to be done. I am assuming the only thing I need to change is the CPU FSB Multiplier and the Memory Settings. Does this board have an auto setting for voltages or do they need to be done manually?

From my understanding, the DS3 and S3 are essentially the same board. Could someone running a e6300 possibly post a few screens of the BIOS setup they are running on that board? As I said.. I am just not very comfortable with this stuff yet and any help given would be greatly appreciated.

there are probably overclocking guides here, and on the motherboard/intel motherboard forums. also there will be lots of good info at xtremesystems.com intel forum concerning bios settings. first you want to flash your bios with the best version for overclocking. check the conroe overclocking database on this forum. it will tell you what vcore is being used, which bios, how well each chip is overclocking, what type of cooling, ram timings, etc.
after you get your machine set up, xp installed and stable, flash your bios (if needed). download some of the stability checking progs like orthos, superpi mod 1.4, etc. start bumping up your fsb 5 or 10mhz at a time. leave your ram/fsb at 1/1. leave ram timings at spd. you can screw around with that later. usually first thing you will go for is your top clock speed at default vcore. so bump it up a little at a time, 5 or 10mhz, run say 30 mins or so of orthos (in the beginning), then bump it up another 5 or 10mhz, test, bump...
when you fail orthos, bump up your vcore some, maybe .0125 or .025 and see if that will pass 1 hour of orthos. if yes, start bumpimg up your fsb by 5 or 10mhz again, test 1 hour, etc, etc. until you reach a speed/vcore/temp that you are comfortable with. then if you want, you can tighten up your ram timings, or try running your ram at a higher divider, or go for a lower multi and higher fsb, etc. first get it running, and up to s decent clock speed. the resources i mentioned at the beginning of my post will help you tweak your bios/ram, etc. i dont have this board, but what i have explained to you is pretty much universal. good luck. let me know (pm) how its going or if you need any help.
 
From what I see, the DS3 has solid capacitors and the S3 doesn't. I don't remember any other differences. The solid capacitors is supposed to not leak and is electrically superior to the electrolytic stuff.

As far as overclocking goes, it's a breeze to get going. Remember that gigabyte hides the more advanced functions in the bios. If you press Ctrl+F1 at the main screen, it will flash a second, but now you have the advanced options. Took me awhile to see what the fuss was about for this motherboard, but even without me setting the advanced options I was able to go to 400FSB which ends up being 2.8Ghz from the stock of 1.866Ghz or something.
