A little help with LCD technologies?

How bad is the picture quality of a modern TN screen, *really*? I see a lot of "S-IPS or GTFO" threads, but I don't really care about how oversaturated the color gamut is so long as it does sRGB well. I've seen some poor TN screens that had horrible color reproduction - but what about better ones like the Benq G2400x?

H-IPS with a polarizer sounds pretty and all, but it seems that response times in the 12ms neighborhood make me sick when playing FPS-style games. Or maybe it's the 2-3 frame input lag on the 2405FPW I'm using...either way, not something IPS displays seem to improve on. The 2405 is a great all-around screen, but I'd really like to avoid having to whip out my huge clunker CRTs so often.

Planar PX2611W:

  • 16ms / ~1 frame (per Anandtech per ToastyX)
  • 5ms GTG (!!!) / 12ms (unaccelerated?)

DoubleSight DS-263N:

  • Rebranded Planar.

See, now I feel silly for not having noticed the stats on those. The lag is definitely better - I wouldn't mind lower, but 1/3rd of my current input lag will be a big difference and 16ms is very good. What am I looking at with the response rate - GTG is the important one, right? But I'm used to seeing the advertised rate low, and GTG higher if they admit to it. This business of a good GTG and a longer normal rate is a little confusing.

Is the lack of a polarizer very significant? I've read about this "sparkle" thing, but I don't recall having seen it in action.

Edit: Well, the NEC seems to have a significantly higher lag. I guess it's no polarizer or no H-IPS.

Weird thing there is that they supposedly use the same LCD - so the lag is being introduced by the NEC's controller implementation. Bummer.

Hmm, thanks. There's a bigger database including similar shots and also much more here:

Grr, I really want the A-TW polarizer. You'd think it would get used more, it's just a film layer under the final protective layer on the display. I think?

Another interesting chart here. I fudged up the colors a bit because some nutter originally used a number of colors that look very similar to me (colorblindness, not anything about my current display).

Trying to sort out at this point if some of the issues (like the striping and the glow) will bother me. Lots of the posts seem to indicate that it's mostly a grab bag on this and the DS models.

Some of the DoubleSight DS-263N are being shipped with the polarized screen. Some are buying them from places like Amazon so they can exchange them if they get one that isn't and not get a restocking fee (have to buy from Amazon and not one of their merchants).

You might want to wait to check out the refresh on the DoubleSight. It's the DoubleSight DS-265W. Same panel as the N, but there's some confusion whether or not it'll have the polarization, hdmi, or the actual release date. Might have been set back. Still worth waiting imo. If you can that is.

Yeah, I've started spamming F5 on the DS-265W and HP LP2475W threads...hopefully one of those will provide a nice alternative. Lots of us in that basket right now, it seems. :D

The 24" wouldn't be bad...I have one of those Westy 37" v3s sitting on a back riser of my desk. At 26", I *should* still be able to see it over the lower monitor...well, we'll see. A low-lag 26" with the polarizer would be more than enough incentive to rearrange a few things.

Adding note that the LVM-37v3 is S-MVA.

Is there a major difference between the Planar PX2611W and the HP LP2475W other than the size and variety of inputs? It sounds like "no polarizer" on the new DS monitor, so it's probably between those two for me.
___________

Planar on order. Got the last one from the sale at Provantage, bwahaha. We'll see how it goes...:D
