Some thoughts on this thread: http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=993835

First off, friendly banter and competition is one thing - (That is why p[H] and I had no problem with this thread initially. For once, Marty was not in the wrong. ;) Hell, even I lob an insult or two across their bow from time to time... ) - but screwing with the points is quite another. It is simply unacceptable for us or any other team to be folding under user's names for team 33.

In case this is confusing to any of you, someone from team 33 was folding under Bollocks name, but crediting the points to us. We have seen this before, and as you are all aware, Stanford strictly prohibits this.

Actions of this nature only serve to muddy the name of the [H]orde and will not be tolerated. The offender has been asked to rectify the situation and hopefully his efforts will be enough to convince Bollocks to put this behind him.

I make you this promise.... If I ever hear of this happening again, I will ask that action be taken via Stanford to have the issues ironed out on their end and that any indiscretions be dealt with as they see fit so as not to jeopardize the team and it's reputation.

Lately some of the good natured ribbing between teams has been getting a bit over the top and needs to be toned down. This applies to all, including myself.

Please give this careful consideration.

To add my $0.02 to Moose's statements. In all of the rivalry and fun we have between teams, there should be absolutely no tampering with the stats of active folders for another team. I can only imagine the moods that some of us would take to find that our stats were being manipulated by someone on another team.

I'd ask that in light of this situation, that everyone go back and just think how they'd like to be treated and treat all members of not only our, but all other teams with the same respect.

Please provide linkage to where "Stanford strictly prohibits this". IE using pre existing user names from one team, and folding for another team under this name.

Also, does Stanford limit folding under existing user names but under the same team?

Not trying to piss in the wind here, it's just I've been known to change names I fold under from time to time and don't want to cross any lines.

Well, if you take a look at this thread you will see that while the situation was not exactly the same, it was deemed ethically wrong and the stats were eventually removed.

That was completely different in my opinion, that was flat out theft of computer resources (borging machines via worm/virus/stealth--did they ever find out how this was done?) vs. this which is using your machines legally but screwing up peoples stats.

I can beat this horse to death, right now I kinda disagree with the mod's opinion on this matter.

I want to hear from Bollocks on this, there are very, very few folders I respect more and would like his take on this.

The last Vijay had ever posted in that thread was that they believed it was a trojan.

As for speaking with Bollocks, you'll probably have to contact him at OCAU as this issue has risen because of his displeasure with what happened.

While it appears that it isn't specifically called out in any of Stanfords documentation/FAQ's/EULA's, it is in my opionion, very disrespectful to tamper with the stats of someone not on your team. If you are helping someone on your team out, or in the case of Mage and UD, just doing it for a little fun, its all for the same team, so no harm no foul. In this case, someone went out of their way to tamper with someone elses stats outside of our team, which has caused some upset. So we are asking that people not mess with the stats of other teams in a show of respect.

I read that thread and you are correct - the situation is not the same at all. I also agree with you about how the taunts are getting out of hand. I like this rivalry to stay friendly.

I do disagree with you guys getting your shirt tied in a know about these folding names. I think it is quite funny. I woud categorize this behaviour as shenanigans and leave it at that. I could care less about someone else folding under my name for a different team. I fold for the [H]orde and that's that.

Still causing trouble, eh Marty? I gotta agree with the mods on this one. One thing to screw with family, and another to screw with the other team. Let's show them respect and be sensitive to the fact that they wouldn't want to be seen as folding for the enemy.

"the enemy". I do not consider any of the DC F@H folders as the enemy. I consider them comrades in arms in the Great Battle against the Beast.

For the record, even per Moose, I had nothing to do with this one. I prefer to view this as expressing an opinion.

Yes, I have email threads regarding different post banning folding names and almost all have Moose sucking something but that's neither here no there... :)

I don't think this specific action is against Stanford's ELUA, which is why I asked for linkage. Mostly a moot point, if something is not cool to do, then it does not matter if it's in the rules or not. I was just curious if it was in the official rules ect.

By biggest concern, if I can read between the lines and guess whom did this, they gave themselves a self imposed vacation (read short ban). My problem is at the end of the day, we are all here to answer the new folders first question to light the fire and now there is one less of us to do that.

On the flip side, Bollocks has spent years under his account and now it is forever "tainted". Some care a great deal about this, some don't.

I wonder why Stanford never password'd the accounts as UD does.

Well at least I got some response. I don't see them as the enemy either, but that is how some people see it when they get miffed that they're name is folding for the other team even if they should be able to understand that the action was taken in jest.

I knew that you didn't commit the "heinous crime" Marty but see that you are ensuring that the moderators don't let all the power go to their heads.

Thanks for keeping it interesting enough for me to start posting again.

So I shouldn't be using Vertigo as my name because there is another Vertigo that folds for MaxPC and he happens to have been doing it longer?

Username alone means nothing, IMO

The problem here is that this was premeditated to fold under someone else's name to get to them. There unfortunately was intent, and in this instance it wrinkled a friend of the [H]orde the wrong way.

Had it been accidental, I'm sure it wouldn't be the problem that it blew up into, but it was all but said "Hey I am going to fold for my team under your name".

Well I fold under some one's elses name under a diff team... Look it up

My contest name is a name of a different folder on a different team. Hope they aren't getting all confused about how they have a new comp folding under their old team.

As p[H]ant0m mentioned. This is not a case of "Oh i have the same username!" It's that someone clearly went forth with intent, to do something "bad." The fact that it is "fun and games" or "Friendly competition" does not matter. The action itself is wrong. There was no permission requested, or granted, and thus, should not have been done. While you, yourself, may not care if someone else uses your name to fold for another team, There are people who do. Keep in mind that they also have spent a considerable amount of time, AND money on this project. While it is for the common good, it does not give us a carte blanche to do whatever the hell we want.

It's called good sportsmanship. The actions of one idiot can cast a bad image for the rest of the team, and I don't really like that idea. I'm sure that Kyle, relic, and many others who founded the team, as well as many of us who have joined since then, want to keep up the good image of our team.

I think that K* captured the intent of this thread perfectly.

The key here is to use good judgement. These actions clearly lacked such.

I do not believe this ... is this a case of the pot calling the kettle black? Come on ... Kodiakstar trying to be the voice of reason? Hey Kodiak, can you post over at OCAU, or maybe, perhaps, you are STILL BANNED?

I could not let this one go unanswered.

This is not the time to start fighting within the team.

We're just asking for some cross team respect and for everyone to think before they do something that will affect someone on the other teams.
