A great HDD error scanner??

If you're looking for scanning and data recovery then it's hard to beat Spinrite.
If you're just looking for bad blocks than HD Tune might work.
 
badblocks in read-write mode for drives that have no data on them (i.e. before I put them in to service or re-purpose them).

If I think an in-service drive is questionable I give it a pass with badblocks in read-only mode, works just as well as any other tool.
