A fixable problem? ATI AGP 8x crashes.

Hello. First I would like to introduce myself to the forums. This is my first post. :)

Anyways, I was wondering if my ATI 9800 pro (256) has a hardware problem or a software problem. Because whenever I set my AGP to 8x, the video card will crash the whole system. VPU recovery doesn't even work etc. But when I set it to 4x AGP, it runs ok. The thing is I don't even get near the framerates I hear about on benchmarks and from my friends. I am guessing that 4x AGP slows down the card a bit.

What could be the issue? The card crashes on any game after a short period and sometimes even windows media player and other non 3d applications.

*EDIT* Also I have all the newest drivers etc.
 
It's a voltage issue. The ATI cards need less voltage when there in 8x mode than in 4x mode and in some motherboards you can't change it. You shouldn't be excperiencing any slowdowns though because the 4x should be plenty of bandwidth for that card.


Are you sure you don't have a 128 bit 9800 pro? I've seen alot of those floating around lately.


Also posting the rest of your system specs will help diagnose your problem.
 
Need to know your motherboard to help more, but as snotrocket mentions, you may be able to lower the voltage to your AGP card in the bios.
 
same thing happened with a 9800pro I got for my bro's pc. His system was the same as mine except for the cpu and power supply, his was a 3000+ whinny and a fortron 400w, but I had to disable VPU recovery and bump down to 4x AGP to stop it from crashing. Dunno why it happens, but it does. Not much you can do about it I don't think. Try changing the volts though. And the rest of your system specs would help.
 
I'd try and fix the problem, because of the principle of the matter.

However, those cards barely utilize 4x AGP. The difference between the two is negligable. If you aren't getting the frame rates you expected, it's gotta be something else in your rig.
 
I had the exact same problem with my 9600 pro for over a year and could never solve it. There are apparently two voltage standards for 8x agp and ATI cards don't like the higher voltage. Problem is on alot of MB's the AGP voltage is locked.

Mine wasn't locked it only went higher. I believe the correct voltage for an ATI card in 8x agp is .7 volts. A little poking around on a few forum boards you could probably find it.
 
I have an AMD 64 bit processor. I think the 3400+. I am not at home so I don't know which motherboard I possess but I know I bought this computer from abspc.com and it was there first 64 bit processor computer offered. I'll be able to tell you when I get home.

Phew.. I thought there was something wrong with the card.
 
Coming back from the dead it's the ATI 9600 Pro crash!!!

These symptoms sound a lot like what's been happening to my computer lately. My bios shows two AGP voltage settings, 1.5 and 1.7. It's on 1.5 and crashing (sometimes VPU recover saves me, sometimes it doesn't) Any suggestions as to where else I could go to change the voltage (or something else that might fix it).
